The command failed to execute

I have the same problem. Windows Mail just stopped executing any
attachments. Surely with so many people having this problem, Microsoft could
fix this issue. I have had Vista Ultimate installed for about six months and
Windows Mail is the program I use. I DO NOT want to use Windows Live Mail as
I am very happy with my current Internet Services provider. However, I am
not happy with this issue.

Here is the fix.

Start windows Mail, goto TOOLS, OPTIONS, SECURITY. Under Download Images,
Check, "Block images and other external content". Then close and re-open
windows mail. Now when you click on the attachment, a warning comes up
asking you if you want to open it and below that is another check box to do
this every time. Now it should work properly.

Microsoft will not fix any bugs in Windows Mail since it is a discontinued product.
You should upgrade to its replacement, Windows Live Mail. Doing so will not
in any way have anything to do with your current Internet Services provider.
Please explain why you think that.

Well it looks like my fix was only temporary. Gary, how come Windows Mail is
a discontinued product when it comes with Vista?

Windows Mail hasn't been updated since Vista was released 2 years ago.
Windows Live Mail has been thru a beta cycle, and a few updates in that time
period.

Tony

Even though Vista is current, the mail program that came with it, is not.
Windows Mail came with Vista when I bought Vista and in my opinion,
EVERYTHING that came with Vista should be supported until Vista is no longer
supported. That's nice that Microsoft wants Advertisement dollars from LIVE
but I will not change to Windows Live Mail. Just because I was forced
abandon Windows Mail because of this issue, I can tell you right now that I
will go to GMAIL before I come back here because of the way you have treated
everyone who bought Vista and now has this issue. Windows Mail should have
been supported at least until Windows 7 was officially released. I will not
be changing my email address to suit you, instead I will be dumping you and
getting another email client.

Dave

Windows Live Mail no longer has ads...
You don't need to change email addresses... WLM can access Gmail accounts
just fine, and any other POP3 or IMAP account..

G

Gary VanderMolen

In essence Microsoft 'fixed' Windows Mail by replacing it for free
with Windows Live Mail. It's like the 'lemon' law for new cars:
if they can't fix it they replace it.
You are misinformed. There are no ads in Windows Live Mail.

You are wise to look around for something better. The people that never
fixed OE, never finished WinMail and now dumping WLM onto people and its
even worse than its predecessors.

If it only happens with one mail account then it is likely that
one particular account is corrupted. Delete that account,
restart Windows Mail, then recreate that account.

G

Gary VanderMolen

In Windows Mail go to Tools, Accounts, select that mail account,
click Remove.
To set up a new account: Tools, Accounts, Add.
Before you delete the old account you may want to write down
its settings by looking at the various tabs under Properties for
that account.

G

Gary VanderMolen

Sounds like your antivirus keeps re-corrupting the account.
Which antivirus are you running? Some of them are not
fully compatible with Windows Mail.

G

Gary VanderMolen

Updates to an antivirus program can cause problems.
The only way to find out if OneCare is the culprit is to do a
trial uninstall of that antivirus program.

Your other option is to upgrade to Windows Live Mail, because
it is less prone to suffering bad effects from antivirus programs.

Gary, it seems to me that if it were the anti virus system, it would
occur on both email addresses.
If I upgrade to Windows Live Mail, will it affect my address list or
anything else?
Do I have to uninstall Windows Mail?
What are the steps to do it?
Thanks

..
Windows Mail problems caused by antivirus programs are not
consistent in how many email addresses of your machine they
affect.

Windows Mail is a part of Vista, and very difficult to uninstall
without also uninstalling the rest of Vista.

If you install Windows Live Mail, during the installation
process it should hide but not remove Windows Mail, and
copy everything it can from Windows Mail's database into its
own database. Do you have enough free disk space to hold
two such databases at once?

If you want to install Windows Live Mail, first download its
installation package here:

http://download.live.com/wlmail

If you need more information on how to install it, a good
newsgroup to ask for that information is:

The antivirus can corrupt one account but not the other.
It seems to be a 'hit or miss' proposition.

When you install Windows Live Mail, it automatically imports
everything from your Windows Mail, then it sets itself as your
default email program. Windows Mail can't be uninstalled.

I have tried every option change suggested on forums. My Windows Mail worked
fine until a recent Microsoft Update. Ever since then I cannot open or
display an email attachment. This is very poor software. I was very happy
with my old Outlook Express. Why did Microsoft have to screw up one of the
few applications they wrote that worked well? There are thousands of people
having this problem and Microsoft has not mentioned it publicly.

Chances are your antivirus is interfering with Windows Mail.
Which antivirus are you running? Some of them are not fully compatible
with Windows Mail.

I have the same problem opening attachments. They include jpgs, pdfs,
microsoft word and excel docs, etc. I have followed all of the suggestions
made as far as security instructions. My antivirus program is AVG. I have
Windows mail on my laptop (also using VISTA Home Premium) and I have
absolutely no problem there. I've had all the same updates on both
computers.

Its all very nice to say switch to windows live mail, or even Mozilla
Thunderbird, but there is always a question of importing all of my contacts
and emails that I've received.

S

Steve Cochran

Uninstall AVG and then reinstall it and disable the email scanning option.
Then remove your mail account, close and reopen Winmail and then add the
mail account back again. See if that fixes the issue. See also point 3
