System Restore Points

Is it true that if you disable System Restore under Windows XP Professional, you will lose all previous restore points? I had a situation in which a virus needed to be removed from my system and I was told to disable System Restore. Now after fixing the virus problem and reenabling System Restore, I noticed that all my previous System Restore Points are gone. Is this the proper behaviour for the System Restore function? If so, why does a temporary disabling of System Restore cause all previous restore points to be lost? Should not there be an explicit warning, when disabling System Restore on any or all drives, that any restore point on that drive will be lost if System Restore is turned off for that drive?

There is no "on screen" warning about restore points being lost if SR is
disabled, it is somewhere in the help files though. All restore points will
be lost if you turn it off. Think of it as, kind of like flushing the
toilet.

Restore points will be re-created after you turn SR back on. By default,
they are created once a day or when you install software, get system
updates, etc.

If you are rid of the virus and your system is running properly, you don't
need any previous restore points. If anything isn't working right, it is
probably the result of the virus.

Post back with a description of any problems and someone will be able to
help.

If you disable system Restore you are telling Windows that you no
longer need it...or the Restore Points.
If the Restore Points were not deleted, then some that disabled System
Restore may have a lot of drive space still committed to a feature not
in use.

Also you had a virus.
The virus was most likely in System Restore.
That is why you were told to disable System Restore.
Disabling System Restore is the proper procedure in this case.
If the Restore Points were not deleted and you restored, guess
what...virus is alive and well.
