system restore feature

I know that if I have the system restore feature turned on it will continue
to automatically create more & more restore points. I want to be able to have
one or two restore points, but then turn off the feature that automatically
creates more restore points. Is it possible to have a few restore points,
then turn the autmatic system restore feature off... so that there are
restore points saved but it doesn't create any more? Or if I turn the restore
feature off, are all restore points then deleted?

You can limit the size, but you cannot "stop" the creation of new ones.

What you are wanting to do would be more of a backup..

If you stop System Restore - it erases all restore points.

One cannot selectively save specific Restore Points.
If you turn-off System Restore, all Restore points
will be deleted.

I don't have a test system right now to try something on, but the following
may be possible. Reading from this MS site

The following is described under "Values That Must Not Be Modified"

DisableSR

This value turns System Restore either on or off. If you turn System Restore
off in the registry, the existing restore points are not removed. This value
must not be modified. System Restore must be turned either on or off only
from the user interface.

If I'm reading the above correctly my existing restore points are not
removed. Therefore it my be possible to export the registry key while System
Restore is on, edit this key to turn it off and still have your Restore
Points intact. If I need to restore I could import the key I saved and it
should work.

I AM NOT suggesting you do any of the above, but just something to study
over. Soon as I get a machine up to try this on I'll let you know.

Restore points form a chain from the present back. It is possible to
cease making points, but you would break the chain and they would not be
useful. You can increase the auto interval in registry at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\
SystemRestore
as value of RPGlobalInterval (in seconds)

And I would limit the space allowed on the disk at System - System
Restore, highlight and settings

SR is an essentially short term matter - don't try to keep points back
far - a couple of weeks or so is all that is sensible. It is not a
backup tool in the usual sense

When you turn off the system restore utility ALL restore points are
deleted. Do not make the mistake of turning the utility off = sooner or
later it may save your "hide".

System Restore does not go "on and on" creating restore points. In fact it
has a nasty habit of not creating the automatic points (System
Checkpoints).You can set a limit on how much "space" is used by the restore
function.

Saving old restore points is not a good idea, and can cause more problems
than it solves. I would suggest setting System Restore to hold a minimum
amount of restore points instead.
