System restore points missing

John L

WinXP Prop SP3
2 disk drives
C: 150GB
D:&E: 200 GB total 75% unused

My friend is using d: for digital pictures and has system restore turned on
for that drive. He usually takes a restore point daily or every other day.

He had some folder problems and went to System Restore and found that all
restore points were gone as of 9/15. He does have automatic update & apply
on.

He is very careful and did not check "turn off", so how did he lose all
restore files.

He began on 9/16 back in his daily routine and the restore files from that
date forward are there.

Can he get any earlier restore files back?

In my view, photographs are simply one particular kind of data, and
separating different kind of data on different drives or partitions
makes no sense at all. But it's his choice, of course.

and has system restore turned on for that drive.

Then he doesn't understand what System Restore is. It is *not* a
substitute for general backup. System Restore creates a backup of
operating system files only. If he has nothing on D: but photographs,
there is nothing on that drive for System Restore to do.

The creation of a restore point is automatically done daily, and he
doesn't need to do it manually unless he wants *more* than one a day.

Is he running Norton Anti-Virus?

The number of restore points kept are limited by the amount of disk space
reserved and the size of each point. You can change that in System
Properties, System Restore settings.
