I'm attempting to set up a two-computer network for connection and file
sharing, etc. One of the desktop is Win XP and the Other windows Vista.
What do I need, Hub, Switch or just connect the 2 computer with a ethernet

It is better to have a switch. Alternatively, you can connect to two

Cable or crossover cable - if you have only computers and save some
money, you can have a crossover cable to connect those machines directly.

It would be more affordable to use a broadband router since it would
permit the sharing of some type of "always on" Internet (DSL or Cable.)
