xp desktop and vista laptop can't communicate

I'm attempting to set up a two-computer network for connection and file
sharing, etc. I ran the ICS wizard on the XP host and attempted to connect
via ethernet cable with my Vista laptop, which established a connection to
the "unidentified network" with "limited or no connectivity." I set up static
IPs on both machines and set the default gateway on the laptop to the XP
host's IP. After matching the workgroup names, the Vista client recognized
the network and went through the usual public/private setup. However, the
machines still don't recognize each other, won't ping each other, and the
Vista laptop continues to display a "limited or no connectivity" error. I
tried some fixes I found on the forums, disabled the IPv6 protocol on the
Vista machine, etc., and I'm running out of patience. Any help at all would
be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and since I know someone's going to bring it up, Windows firewall is
disabled on both machines and I have no third-party firewalls.

Since you ran the ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) wizard on XP, I
assume that you want the XP host to share its Internet connection with
the Vista laptop.

If that's the case, let ICS handle the TCP/IP settings on both
computers. Don't assign a static IP address or change any TCP/IP
settings yourself.

I recommend that you:

1. Disable and then re-enable ICS on the XP host's Internet
connection. That will assign an IP address of 192.168.0.1 to the
host's LAN connection and enable a DHCP server.

2. Configure Vista's network connection to obtain an IP address
automatically. It will get its TCP/IP settings from the XP host's
DHCP server.

I changed the Vista laptop to auto obtain an IP, and the problem persists.
The XP machine still times out when I try to ping the laptop, and the laptop
reports an error 1231 when I attempt to ping the XP host.

If this is an ADSL connection, you would be far better buying a modem/router
box. Might not solve your Vista communication-issues :( but in all other
respects it will work better.
