I simply have 2 pc's that i want to connect for file sharing.

The file i want is 2.7g and i have no usb stick or dvd burner. I have the
ethernet cable or wireless .

They both can connect to the internet as 1 has a wireless connection off a
router, and the other is a straight ethernet connection to the router.

Now I have enabled file sharing from explorer but i dont get any files from
the other pc or vice versa and i have tried using wireless connection.

I search for pc's and none are found.

Do I need a straight cable connection or can i connect using wireless?
Why is nothing showing up about either computer?

If you want to connect it using cable, you need crossover cable. If you want to use wireless, you may want to use setup Ad Hoc mode. This how to may help,

wireless setupIf your wireless network doesn't have an AP, you will need to set your cards to use "AdHoc" mode. When setup Ad Hoc mode, make sure all wireless clients use ...

The hardware setup you have is OK.

Both PCs must be in the same IPA subnet. The easiest way is to enable
the router's DHCP server capability, and to set both PCs to be DHCP clients.
To verify that DHCP is working, run CMD in each PC, then IPCONFIG/ALL in
each PC's CMD window, then confirm that both PCs have IPAs of a.b.c.d
with the same a.b.c and different d's, and that the masks are valid
typically 255.255.255.0)

Next, while you are trying to get file sharing working, temporarily disable
XP's firewall and any other firewalls, and (to be safe) temporarily remove
all AV apps (since some have built-in firewall capabilities). Now you
should be able to PING, by number and by name, in both directions: PC1=>PC2
and PC2=>PC1. If you can't PING, check the router's settings to make sure
that it is set to pass packets between the wired and wireless links (that is
the default for most if not all SOHO routers).

In the ConnectionProperties of each PC's network, make sure that F&P sharing
and Client for M$ Nets are enabled. Verify that TCP/IP is the only networking
protocol enabled and that NetBIOS is enabled over TCP/IP (under the WINS tab).
Now share a file on PC-1 and try to map a net.drive from PC-2 to PC-1's
shared file; and share a file on PC-2 and map to it from PC-1.
