I have a desktop and laptop each connected to the internet via a hub. The
desktop is connected to the hub via ethernet cable. The laptop is wirelessly
connected to the hub. Both computers access the internet successfully.

Using the Network Setup Wizard on each, I've tried to define a Home Network
over which I can share files and printers between the two computers. For
each computer I have specified "other" for the Connection Method and then
specified "This computer connects to the Internet directly or through a
network hub. Other computers on my network also connect to the Internet
directly or through a hub." I've assigned each to the same Working Group and
specified File and printer Sharing to be turned on.

In My Network Places on the Desktop the Laptop computer is not recognized at
all. In My Network Places on the Laptop, the Desktop is recognized, but when
I click to open the Desktop icon I get the following message: \\Desktop is
not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource.
Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access
permissions. The network path was not found." (That last sentence seems to be
key.)

I am using User accounts with administrator privileges on both computers. I
have only one firewall working on each computer. I assume the wireless
connection of the laptop does not preclude file/printer sharing.

What have I missed or done in error?

if you have a hub (and not a router) and have computers connected
directly to the Internet using a broadband modem, it is possible
they have IPs in different subnets. what IP addresses do these
computers have?

are these both XP machines? same usernames and passwords on both
machines?

And when you reply to Barb's questions, please also include the make and
model of the device you are calling a hub. The terms "hub," "switch,"
and "router" don't mean the same thing, even though some people and
publications seem to use the terms interchangeably.

Thanks to you and Lem for the clarification. It is a Linksys WRT54G Wireless
Router (not a hub). What do you think?

Ted,
1.Are the OS's for the PC and notebook, XP Home or XP Pro? There are a few
folders on a "XP Home" computer that you cannot access over a network,
without a third-party program.
a. C:\Program Files
b. C:\Windows
c. C:\Documents and Settings
d. C:\Documents and Settings\USERName\My Documents
Now you can on the XP Home PC, select a subfolder in one of the above
folders, and enable sharing for that folder.

2. You will need to enable sharing of the drive or folders, that you want to
have access over your network. Right clicking the Drive or Folder> Sharing &
Security, and set the folder to share.

3. Control Panel> Windows Firewall> Check the box under Exceptions tab to
Enable File and Printer Sharing.

After fiddling with WorkGroup names, user passwords, router definitions,
firewalls, etc., I finally got the file/printer sharing between the two
computers to work.
