Service packs

Hi all i have just been given a computer with windows xp home on it but it
has no service packs installed on it how do i go about finding sp1 i'm
assuming it has to be installed before sp2 can be installed , the computer
has never been updated

Fortunately, SP1 is redundant if you get SP2. SP1 is "rolled" into SP2.
SP1 + lots of new stuff = SP2

No, just install SP2, which includes all the SP1 fixes. No need
to install SP1 first.

You do not need to install SP1 before SP2. SP2 includes all previous
updates. Please make sure the computer is clean and ready for SP2

No, you don't need SP1 first. Just run Windows Update, and it will figure
out what you need. However, depending on your connection speed, it may take
a long time.

If your computer is that far behind on Windows updates then your best
bet would be to order Service Pack 2 on CD as per the reference in
Malke's response.

I would advise that you do not connect this computer to the Internet
until you have gotten Service Pack 2 installed unless you have a
firewall in place. Otherwise it will almost certainly get nailed with
a virus or two within the first 30 seconds.
