updates for windows xp-service packs

hello,
could someone please explain to me what the service
packs do?before i install it should i archive files? im
so new to our home computer that i still type with two
fingers!! but a friend told me to always stay updated.
could someone explain what could happen if it is and if
it isnt installed .thank you

There is an option to save and archive files before the actual installation.
