Windows XP service pack 3 will not install

Hi, I have three computers in my home and two of them download and installed
sp3 without any problem. The third (all of them are using xp pro)
downloaded the sp3 update and when the computer was rebooting, the message
came up "set up was interrupted. Restoring prior configuration." I tried
disabling my antivirus program and installing sp3 again that the same thing
occurred. I ordered the CD from Microsoft and tried installing sp3 again.
Same thing happened again. I went to C:/windows and looked in the spv3 file
and found the following:

449.656: Service Pack 3 installation did not complete.

250.297: Service Pack 3 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is
not correct.

251.281: Service Pack 3 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is

251.375: Service Pack 3 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is

251.812: Service Pack 3 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is
not correct.

252.469: Service Pack 3 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is

257.984: Service Pack 3 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is

259.422: Service Pack 3 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is

260.344: Service Pack 3 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is
not correct.

261.438: Service Pack 3 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is

Can anyone help me with this update.

Thanks, Starlin

Not as conventional, but try installing it in Safe Mode. Let me know
how it goes.

Starlin,

See: Windows XP Service Pack 2/3 Problem Solver
http://winhlp.com/node/125#Cannot_install_Service_Pack_2

The entries that you posted are typically in all svcpack.logs. The
amount of them is what you need to be concerned about, not their
presence. You need to start at
449.656: Service Pack 3 installation did not complete.
and work your way back up in the log to see where the installation is
failing.
Also, you can enable verbose logging, if need be, as shown on the
Problem Solver page.

*** IF the installed AV was actively monitoring the system during the
initial attempt to install SP3 and the install failed, then it *may* not
have had all of it's services and process temporarily disabled. Either
read the User Guide or visit the manufacturer's web site to see how this
is accomplished ***

MS is offering free support for getting SP3 installed:

http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&prid=11273&gprid=522131
Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for Windows XP, but only for
Service Pack 3 (SP3). This support for SP3 is valid until April 14, 2009. For more information about
this policy, visit the Windows XP Support Lifecycle page located at
http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=3223. Availability of chat or e-mail support differs
depending on your geographic location. For customers residing in North America or Canada, chat and
e-mail support is available.

Some issues may require more advanced support for which there is a charge.

Was a beta build of SP3 ever installed on the machine or is one still
installed?

Did you just reinstall Windows on the machine in question? (I know you've
said in a later reply that it's running WinXP SP2.)

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP
installation or you repair a Windows XP installation

WinXP SP3 - Read all prerequisites for a successful installation
http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldro...requisites-for-a-successful-installation.aspx

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and
e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada. Go to
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=1173 | select "Windows
XP" then select "Windows XP Service Pack 3"

I did the install in safe mode and it installed. I have rebooted twice and
no problems has occurred as of yet. Thanks.

Great! Must have been just one of those things.

There are many programs not running or loaded when in safe mode. Not just
one of those things.

Apparently this incident was resolved by booting in safe mode...

BTW I'm wondering if XP Perf & Maint might have been
a more relevant newsgroup to cross-post this to? ; )
