Need for Service Packs if getting regular updates??

I have XP Home and subscribe to regular updates. I have
installed all the hotfixes since buying the computer 5
months ago. Having done that, do I also need the Service
Packs installed when they come out??
Thanks.

Yes. Updates are not enough. Service packs address much more and add new
options, settings, and functionality. Service packs include all the updates
plus lots more.

if you have windows automatic updates turned on then you
have sp-1.
sp-2 is not ready for distribution yet.

Not necessarily. I wouldn't trust it. I just worked on a computer about an
hour ago that while I was working on it the update thing popped up and said
updates were ready. I installed them, rebooted, then went to windows update
website. There was still 22 updates, many critical, and SP1 was one that was
available. The auto-update did not do sp1 and many others. I recommend just
manually going to windows update website every 1-2 weeks.

Just to add to what Phil said. Yes Service Packs are neccessary, but
don't use Windows Update to install them, as most of the problems that
happened with SP1 were people doing the web install from Windows Update.
When SP2 is released later this year, don't be in a mad rush to download
it, let all those with ants in their pants to do the testing for you.

Good tip Kurt. The network installs or cd installs of the service packs
eliminate the windows update bog down.
