Other way, Echo dear. Word => PowerPoint
m2,
You said that a simple Word document with just 'ABC' failed when you sent it
to PowerPoint, correct? New Word document (without background or graphics)
=> Type 'ABC' => Save Word Document => File => Send To ... => PowerPoint =>
System Lock.
This would suggest a problem with the installation (perhaps a corrupted
component). As Austin, Echo, and Michael have suggested, the basics are the
place to start tracking this down.
It is easiest to work on a non-cluttered system, so all the TMPs can go.
Defragmenting is always a good idea and can improve system speed a lot.
Detect and repair will catch most installations problems with out needing to
completely wipe the system. Norton has known issues with Office files and
is better keeping its nose out of the PPT files altogether. Making sure
that all the SPs, updates, and drivers are current is essential, especially
on a new system (since they were probably updated since the manufacturer
received their installation version). These (except for the detect and
repair) should all be part of your basic system maintenance routine.
Let's check a couple of other things:
File associations: When you double click on a PPT file does it open in
PowerPoint?
Associations part 2: Click on Start => Run => and type 'PowerPnt' (no
quotes). Does PowerPoint open?
Add-in's: Do you have any add-ins installed to PowerPoint or Word? If
there are removed, does it function correctly?
Other Send to options: Can you Send To .. => Mail recipient?
File open: Does it make a difference if PowerPoint is already open when you
Send To?
Post back and let us all know what you have been able to discover.

Well, even a new system can end up with a *lot* of temp files really fast.
FWIW, I was also going to suggest emptying your temporary internet files
folder, deleting all *.TMP files, and running a defrag.
The next thing is to be aware that Send to Word is a huge resource hog. I
would reboot again, open PowerPoint and Word both, and try the Send to
again
with no other applications running.
Also, you might want to disable your virus scan if that doesn't help. If
you're using Norton AntiVirus, be sure to disable the Office Plug-In DLL
as
described here: Norton Anti-Virus and Office

Thanks for the suggestions. Even though my hd is only 6 weeks old, I followed
your advice, but it didn't resolve the problem. I have 79% space clear. All
temp files, etc. are empty. I have run a virus scan, 2 different spyware
scans, updated definitions, etc. All to no avail. I had task manager running
the last time I tried to send a word doc to powerpoint, and while the memory
usage did peak to 96% (with firewall, virus protection, outlook, & ie
also
running), it went down to 82%. That's when the system froze again. Even the
clock stopped running. I had to manually reboot the system again. I'm using
xp with office pro 2003. Are there any other suggestions to get this option
to work? I'd hate to have to cut & paste files into powerpoint! Thanks!
:
You might try by first cleaning up your system, with a defrag, and deleting of
all the tmp files. this sometimes rectifies problems.

I have been trying to send a word doc to powerpoint, and it keeps freezing my
computer. Initially I thought it was because it was too much info (even
though I've sent larger files in the past), but I tried sending a word doc
that only said "abc" to powerpoint, and it still froze my computer. I'm not
even able to pull up the task manager or do any other work when this happens.
I have to manually shut my computer down and restart. I cannot
determine if
the problem is with word or with powerpoint. Any suggestions? Thanks!
