Screenshot Captor: A New Definition for Freeware

Where is the key file page?
there is a link to the license key page on so many pages on dc it would
be hard to list them.
there is a link to it from the very top left of the page of each
program that requires a license.
there is a link to it from the home page (bottom left)
there is a link to it from the help page (third item labeled "How/Where
do I download a freeware license key?")

Certainly that's the most common type of nagware, but nagging people to
make a "donation" or to visit your website repeatedly is also nagging.

I don't exactly know the definition of nagware, but I know when I feel
nagged! <LOL!>

B

Bob Adkins

Perhaps calling (some of) the DonationCoder applications "freeware" is
wrong - "DonationWare" might be a more appropriate term. It's important to
note, though, that you do NOT have to donate to be able to use the
applications fully, and in that sense they are "freeware".

It's nag-donation-register-free-armtwist-guilt-ware. Holy cow! :)

another point:
software listing sites only let authors choose from Shareware or
Freeware.

Download sites usually have columns for short and long descriptions, and for
limitations. There are usually plenty of opportunities to mention the
software needs a key to prevent a popup.

Terribly sorry to disagree with you, but how much money did you pay in
order to use Donationcoder software? In my experience, many, many free
programs ask you to register. IMHO, if you don't have to pay money to
make the nag go away, then it is freeware.
I will admit my prejudice here. I am a long time user of several of
Mouser's programs. I have, in fact, donated to the forums, not because
I am terrified to send 2 emails in a year (though actually you can get
by with one) but because I believe in exchanging value for value. I
also love the forums on that site.

It's not that I was having trouble locating
<http://donationcoder.com/Keys/index.php>. But I assumed fOdder had
meant something else when he said "key file page", since there was
supposed to be an offer there from you to e-mail non-expiring keys to
anyone who wants one.

What is the URL of the page on which you offer to send a non-expiring
license key to anyone who e-mails you, if there is one?

M

mouser

i have said this as well on usenet threads and several forum posts on
our forum with help about signing up, etc. a handfull of people have
emailed and taken us up on this offer and we have never turned anyone
down or made them feel bad about asking.

for example:
http://www.donationcoder.com/Forums/bb/index.php?topic=770.0 :
"If you know for sure that you can't or aren't willing to make a
donation, but would still like a full membership, please email me
([email protected]) and explain your position and i will upgrade
your account to full member status."

also:
"You may also mail us your donation or contact us to arrange an
alternate method of donating. If you cannot afford to donate anything,
send us a postcard or letter instead, and we will treat it as
equivalent to a donation; if you are an artist, send us a painting or
drawing. Should you ever decide that you regret donating, just contact
us for a refund."

No, I quoted some specific threads where "an offer there from you to e-mail
non-expiring keys". But that might as well be done from the key page.

on our forum with help about signing up, etc. a handfull of
people have emailed and taken us up on this offer and we have

But people won't find your offer to simply e-mail them keys unless they
search for your Usenet post or webforum posts.
also:
"You may also mail us your donation or contact us to arrange an
alternate method of donating. If you cannot afford to donate

But that is for people who want to "donate" something other than money;
the only way they reach that page is by clicking "Don't want to use
PayPal? Click here for alternate donation methods."

Anyone who looks at your site for a way to get license keys without
paying you or joining your club will wind up at the page that only
offers keys which are good for 60 days at a time.

Since you use Google and encourage your webforum users to use it also,
you should probably check out
<http://www.safalra.com/special/googlegroupsreply/>.

No, I quoted some specific threads where "an offer there from you
to e-mail non-expiring keys".

One of the forum posts you quoted was mouser's
<http://www.donationcoder.com/Forums/bb/index.php?topic=875.0>,
"I have also said this in a couple of places, including the key file
page: If you know you are not going to donate, send me an email i
will make you a non-expiring license key."
But that might as well be done from the key page.

But it's not said on the key file page. I assume it once was there, as
mouser said it was. That post of mouser's is rather old, but your post
quoting it was to clarify "how the things currently work" for John F.,
so you can see how I expected to find the e-mail offer on the current
key file page.
Re-read my posts and read through the board posts.

Thanks. I'd lost sight of the fact that "key file page" was mouser's
quote, and that you never used the phrase.

As you say. There is no page called "Key file".

As you also said ;

"Anyone who looks at your site for a way to get license keys without
paying you or joining your club will wind up at the page that only
offers keys which are good for 60 days at a time."
Was mouser's offer to send non-expiring keys to anyone who asks for one
removed from that page? I don't see it.

Neither can I. Another example of "jumping through hoops".

What mouser, and others, seem to want to ignore is that some of us
hate web forums. Did I say "hate" ? What I meant to say was "HATE"
web forums.

I subscribe to numerous mailing lists and dozens of newsgroups local,
national and international. Usenet and private.

Even if I didn't dislike forums my mailing list reading, newsgroup
reading, and beta testing of programs leaves me no spare time.
Not to mention the multimedia studies I am also involved with.

I also emailed mouser on 10/12/05 pointing out that I couldn't afford
to donate at this time. I don't appear to have got a free licence or
any reply at all to that.

Another thing that mouser ignores is that some people feel bad about
not having the money to pay for things they want. So it isn't so easy
to go begging for licence keys. Some of us would rather do without
than do that.

Regards, John.

Thanks. Where is that stated on the site ?

I think it's stated in either some of what I've posted, or in the thread
I've linked. If not, mouser should add it to a very public visible place on
the site - and I'm sure he wouldn't mind doing that :)

It's more likely that it wasn't there, but mouser wanted it to be. The poor
guy is pretty stressed, and afaik he'd rather spend time on the programs
than updating the site... even if we've been a few cracking the whip at his
back to get a few changes done :)

Indeed, I quite understand you - sorry if the pages are outdated, but as I
understand and *feel* things are going, they're still relevant. Of course I
might have misjudged mouser 100%, but he does seem like one of those very
few decent people that are still around.

It's quite annoying if you don't want to take advantage of the forums (a
real shame, but if you're reaææ busy it's quite understandable; usenet takes
some time :))

If any other people experience this, *please* report to this newsgroup! I
personally think this must have been a one-time error, but if anybody else
have experienced it, I'd like to see it!

You don't need to be a beggar, a simple "Hi mouser I don't want to donate
please give me a key" should be fine enough :). If that didn't work, please
post here so you can nag mouser.

Personally, which makes me quite subjective and opinionated, I've only had
good experiences with donationcoder.com and mouster.

Btw I felt quite nagged when I first tried the DC programs - but being on
the IRC channel and thinking "Oh well, it's free after all" helped a lot :)
