Saving jpg files

I just got Windows XP with Internet Explorer version 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633

When I save .jpg files from the internet with my own name, I have to manually add the .jpg extension even though the 'Save Picture As' box recognizes the 'save as type' ad JPEG(*.jpg)

I've read Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 324761 & 326675, and these don't apply to me as it happens after I've cleared both the Cache, cookies, and files. This also happens using both ATT and Earthlink as ISPs

This did NOT happen with my old system with Windows 98 and Internet Explorer version 6.0.2800.10061S

I don't want to have to type in the extension every time, especially since the system recognizes it as a .jpg. Do I have to uninstall the current IE version and install the older version? Or is there something I can do with the new version

Again, this only happens now when I rename the file before saving it, and didn't happen on my old system

Thanks
Romas

Do all the other files in your computer have the extension showing? If so
you can go to the FOLDER OPTIONS conrol panel, view tab, and select "hide
extensions for known file types". Then you should be good to go.

Good luck.

I think Steve gave the exact opposite of the right solution. I'm betting
you HAVE "hide
extensions for known file types" selected and you need to deselect this so
Windows shows all file extensions all the time. It looks like you need to
add the .jpg but you really don't.

FYI, I can't think of any reason anyone would want to hide file extensions,
and it's bizarre that Windows comes with this option as the default.

Why hide file extensions? Because YOU know what kind of file your dealing
with, your APPLICATION knows what kind of file it's creating and knows how
to include the extension when saving, and as the file extensions only exist
to tell windows what kind of file it is, why should the user "be the one
responsible" to add them? To me it's like formatting code in a word
document - it's stuff I usually don't need to see.

Except for the fact that hiding file extensions leaves you open to all sorts
of virus attacks with double extensions and spoofed icons. In my mind the
file extension is an integral part of every file and it annoys me no end not
to be able to see it and have to depend on some icon to tell me what it is.

But if it makes you happy, hide them by all means.

Steve,

"Hide extensions..." is one of the simplest ways to enable virus
spread. Many viruses have been spread because people would open
"virusinstall.jpg.exe", displayed as "virusinstall.jpg", because they
had "Hide extensions..." enabled.

Please don't advise folks to select that setting.

Romaso,

If you rename a file before saving it, and don't manually type in the
".jpg" on the end, what name shows up when you view the saved file in
Windows Explorer? From Windows Explorer, right click on that file,
choose Properties. What name shows in the box at the top of the
Properties wizard?

Cheers,

Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

I like to have my extensions showing for the reason you stated but I am that
the default was to have them 'hidden' because I seem to remember it was one
of the first things I did when I had my laptop was to uncheck that option.
You'd have thought Microsoft would have had it unchecked as default for
security reasons wouldn't you.

You'd hope they would have figured that out by now. Of course that
was discussed years ago so why rehash old memories...
