S-L-O-W initial connection

Win XP Home - Internet Explorer 6.0 Outlook Express 6.0

If I try to connect to the internet immediately after a boot up I have to
wait
sometimes for about 60 seconds before any response.
After that initial delay I can connect almost immediately at any
time.(broadband)
I click on the explorer icon which is in the quick launch toolbar.
Any idea why this occurs only after boot up?
Any solution please !

That's not at all unusual. Windows may still be initializing processes,
making the connection, obtaining an IP address etc. Also your firewall
(hopefully you're using one) may be loading. 60 seconds is not an abnormal
delay. It's doubtful you could do much to speed it up except perhaps to
hibernate rather than shut down.

Hi,

It might be a good idea to check for spyware using Adaware and Spybot. I
know machines where MS AntiSpyware (in the beta stage it is now) solved this
problem.

Kind regards

GTS,
OK! Thanks ,
I notice in Task Manager/Processes that there are approx. 35 programs
running.
Is there any software that could advise if they are all necessary at start
up ?
As you can see, I'm a bit of a novice.

Thank you, Hans,
I do have Microsoft's recent "Anti Spyware"program
Any thoughts on the comment I made about my Task Manager/Processes ?
