Internet Explorer Closes W/O Error Message

I am using Internet Explorer 6.0 in Windows XP. When I
try to open Internet Explorer the window opens, but
closes after a few seconds without an error message.

I have tried to go through the Control Panel to run
Windows Update to check for any critical updates and
receive an ERROR # 0x80096001.

Does anyone know how to correct this problem?
