Replacement for Paint Shop Pro

I tried it about the same time - having had a course using PSP5, I thoght
I could learn a new graphic prog

However, I bought a digital camera early last year...
I found it very buggy and crashy, as well as coping with the interface,
so got PSP6, I've now got PSP7, but ISTM that 6 was the one where PSP
grew into a proper prog with all needed facilities
Now I'm not the pro graphical artist, but I really don't get the Gimp
GUI-bashers... I'm just afraid they base their opinions on outdated
versions.
Me neither, it wasn't the GUI that beat me, really, I guess it wasn't
properly ported to windoze - I find that a lot with linuxware. And I
think sometimes new interfaces prove to be much better, but I've given up
trying to cope with software that doesn't work properly, I'm not clever
enough; and besdides, although I'm all for freeware, why give yourself
grief when you've already got a good paid prog.

I would encourage everybody to get and develop GIMP. It's heart@s in the
right place (just behind it's left leg)

I guess it's all the wierd names and logos that freesource type progs use

Mozilla, K-meleon Gimp, etc

I think it's because they'yr naturalised Klingons, like linux folk (who
are often not naturalised...... selects scamper gear, and puts tin hat
on..

I think that Sha's post has hit the nail on the head here. People
rubbish GIMP because its different in as the functionality is there,
just in a different place.

I did exactly the same thing a year or so ago. Been a PSP user for
years, downloaded GIMP to see what some freebie software was like. Ran
it up, gave it 20 mins and got nowhere. Removed and deleted the
install.

About 6 months ago noticed a post here about GIMP so thought I'd give
it a try again. This time I spent some time first getting to know where
everything was and how it worked. Now I can quite happily do all the
things I want in GIMP. Image manipulation for website, graphics for
software, works fine.

I don't think this is just a problem unique to GIMP though. I believe
people just get used to using one piece of software and don't like it
if something that performs a similar job goes about it in a different
way.

Anyways, thats my 2 pennies worth :)

I never had problems with crashes, not even with development versions that
are sometimes available from the usual Gimp-Windows site.

Then again, I'm running Win2000, maybe you're trying on Win98? I can
imagine that that would give more problems...

Yup, 98SE, nothing wrong with it that wasn't designed in.

I've had it for a long time and find it pretty good (with TLC)

The GIMP is wonderful (but bloatware)-Babya image editors aren't (just
need the vbrun6sp5.exe file and most are under 5mb installed).

there is a plug-in (for the windows version) called Deweirdifyer that you
may find helpful. I've not used it myself as I actually like the Gimp
GUI...

"A little plugin for Windows Gimp that gets rid of some of the weirdnesses
and annoyances in the Windows version of Gimp.
Adds a background window that sits under gimp. It removes the other ten
million gimp windows from the task bar and the alt-tab menu and takes
control of them itself. You can just alt tab off gimp and then alt tab back
and all your windows appear as they were before. When you're alt-tabbing,
there aren't a million different gimp icons to go through before getting to
a different application. Only one icon on the taskbar, no more taskbar
clutter and clicking that icon brings up *all* the gimp windows."

Oh and there's a windows menu on the background window to select windows
if you lose any under other gimp windows.
Basically it makes GIMP work more like a single windows application than
a bunch of windows. You'll either love it or hate it.
Apparently it works on Win98/ME, although it's only tested by me on
WinXP."

This works for me, though I can also see the advantages of GIMP's
default floating toolbars.

Has anyone tried babya pgoto workshop-not garbage-lots of effects and
project types?

Why would anyone bother trying "not-garbage" that nevertheless is garbage.

Well I've not used 6 but have used 7 and 8 and currently use
PSP9 and must say that if you seriously believe that B.P.W. is
comparable then you are suffering delusions of the highest order.

I was going to mention that one myself... was just wandering around
one of the few English tutorials
http://frontpagesolutions.com/photofiltre/tutorials.htm

I'll have to throw some of the others into babelfish, and see if if
chews them up completely.

Armed with some of the extra filters and stuff, Photofilter becomes
quite powerful - the white balance correction plugin being a case in
point.
