Replacement for Paint Shop Pro

W

Wayfarer

I've been using Paint Shop Pro 6 for years and I'm wondering what, if
any, are some comparable freeware apps. I mostly use it for web
graphics formats for editing palettes and resizing, and sometimes for
screen captures, too.

TIA

Satori PhotoXL is pretty good.....not 'quite' as advanced as PSP, but

Get it while you can [the above link still works].

I hate to be an old grouch, but if you have PSP 6 I don't think you'll find
a freeware better.

I had PSP6 for years, it was the first fully capable version, and IMO later
ones have only been improved at the edges.

I tried GIMP, too.... so appropriately named.

In addition to the ones previously mentioned, you may want to take a look
at:

1. Ultimate Paint @ http://www.ultimatepaint.com/. There is a freeware
version. I used an earlier version years ago and was quite happy with it.
The freeware version basically is crippled wrt Adobe Photoshop filters and
has only 20 built-in filters. However, Irfanview @ www.irfanview.com accepts
Adobe filters so maybe you can use the two together?

2. Image Forge @ http://www.cursorarts.com/ca_imffw.html. The interface is a
little goofy -- IIRC Theodore Roosevelt (!) pops up to give you some user
advice from time to time.

3. Finally, depending on your intents you may want to check out Project
Dogwaffle @ http://www.squirreldome.com/cyberop.htm. This one is geared more
for "painters" rather than photo manipulation. Click on the dowload nav
button on the left to learn more about the freeware version. Some of the
features missing from the current freeware version can be found in the older
freeware version that is still floating around the Internet.

Happy painting. . .

Why would anyone waste their time reviewing garbage?

run all you like, mike...there is no cover from the OGUB (outraged gimp
users brigade ;)

Which was the last version you tried of GIMP? I first installed it a two or
three years or so ago and found it so difficult to get to grips with I gave
up...However, I bought a digital camera early last year and when looking for
an image editor had another bash at the GIMP, which had just reached version
two. I've personally found it a lot easier to use than before (maybe I
just invested more time in learning it) and there is a lot of support
available to users (a 900 page online book, a newsgroup, various mailing
lists and online tutorials)

With the appropriate plug-in (pspi) GIMP can also load most PS compatible
..8bf filters, not somethingthat can be said of many freeware image editing
apps.

I'm in the same boat, been using Gimp since shortly before the Gimp 2
release. Just like you, I reserved some time to get used to using the
program, skimming through things like "Grokking The Gimp" [1]. Add in a
few short tutorials ([2], [3]) and you're up to speed...

Now I'm not the pro graphical artist, but I really don't get the Gimp
GUI-bashers... I'm just afraid they base their opinions on outdated
versions.

But, as always: to everyone its own :)

Regards,
Wald
