Paint Shop Pro 5 persistent file type

A few weeks ago I installed an free copy of Paint Shop Pro 5.0 I'd picked up
with an old PC magazine. I later uninstalled it and replaced it with another
graphics package. Ever since then, however, all my photos now have "Paint
Shop Pro 5 Image" as a file type - even photos that were saved after I
uninstalled this program!

Is there any way of getting rid of this persistent bug?

Thanks.

Right click on one of your photos.
Click on Open with on the opening menu.
Click on Choose program at the bottom of the opening list.
Click on Windows Pictures and Fax Viewer on the opening list and check the
box "Always...".

Have tried that, thanks.

The problem isn't actually opening and viewing the photos - it's the fact
that there's something left behind by Paint Shop Pro that persists in
labelling all my photos as Paint Shop Pro Images even when they weren't in
the first place! I just want to see my photos in their original format and
not hijacked by PSP.

Maybe the following links will offer something useful:

Also...you could try the following steps...

Open a folder and go to...
Tools / Folder Options / File Types...

Scroll down to the format in question...
JPEG for example...

Select JPEG / Advanced button / Change Icon button...

What do you want to use to see your photos?
Photos in original format? How can Paint Shop Pro change the original format
when you uninstalled it?
The only thing you have is PSP "File image type". This is irrelevant, it
does not change the original format which is jpeg.
The directions I gave you should change this, it will remove PSP type to
JPEG type.
Unless PSP made a hidden file in your photo folder. Check this by opening
your folder and select Folder Options and check display hidden file name.
See if there are added file there, in addition to photo files (jpg) and just
delete them.

What Yves said should make the change that you want which is to label all of
the jpegs as some other program's files.
If, however, his stepdoes not work, then you go into folder options and
select file types. Delete the jpeg file type. Then create the jpeg file
type and associated it with the program that you wish.
