Compatibility mode madness

Last year I had to buy a computer, despite misgivings about the quality of
the only widely-used OS available for PCs.

I ordered a Dell, with Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo XI, because the OEM
package was on offer and I need to process photos.

This application, ready installed on the Vista system, was incompatible with
Vista - well done Dell.

I was able to run it in "Compatibility mode (XP).

A couple of weeks ago, Uncle Bill launched a compulsory Vista update and, as
with several other applications, Vista told me that Corel Paint Shop Pro
Photo XI had stopped working.

Trying to find a workaround, I downloaded an update (in fact a complete
reinstall) from Corel - no luck.

After much messing around, I found the compatibility mode tickbox was still
ticked (despite the reinstall), that the application no longer works in
compatibility mode, but that it now works under V*st*.

No help from Dell
No help from Corel
As always, no help from M$

What a waste of time.

I just want to use my computer.

Try setting the Install.exe to XP compatibility. Then run install.exe As
Administrator. Next go to the newly created Corel folder and set the Corel
executable(s) to XP Compatibility. Then try running the Corel program(s) as
Administrator. Lastly try and change the security settings on the Corel
folder to give your usual user account FULL CONTROL. If you can't, you need
to activate the REAL ADMINISTRATOR account and go change the Corel folder
Security settings. Hope it works. It's the closest way I know to get Vista
back to XP behavior.

XP is the best OS, and will remain so, until and if Windows 7 fixes the mess
called vista.

Vista has become the WindowsMe of NT.

that.

You idiot Tadpole. You must known the rules.

The manufacturer of you idiotic Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo is responsible
for making it compatible with any OS their customers run into.

Don't blame Bill. He has never heard of Corel. You buy cr*ap and eat it.

Go to a manufacturer's website and find out if they have a new download. It
should be a zip file. They will give you instructions how you can pull
yourselves by bootstraps and get out of trouble.

Vista has nothing to do with it. You paid money to Corel and harangue them,
not MS.

Incidentally there is at least a dozen photo shops that some big wigs try to
shove down your throat. Adobe and Google come to mind. MS Vista has theirs.
What is the bi deal with Corel? A special relationship?
