Removed Spyware Now I can't get on the internet

T

System Specs: Win xp home (SP2), IE 6

I ran Ad-aware and removed eveything it suggested. Now I can not get on the
internet. I ran Ipconfig and verified that I have a valid IP address and
correct DNS servers. Next I did a ping to 4.2.2.2 and got good replies. I
then pinged www.yahoo.com and got good replies. When I open the browers it
tells me that IE can not find teh search page.

I have ran winsockxpfix and whndnfix. It still dosn't work. I am
reinstalling SP2 right now in hopes that this will help. If this dosn't fix
the problem what can I do?

Thanks
Troyd

Hi troy :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Download, install and run LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Hi troy :)

Try the following and see it this will help resolve the problem:

Go to DOS: START - RUN - type COMMAND - press ENTER. (To exit type EXIT)

At the DOS C:\ prompt type the following, hitting enter after each line.

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

also........

At the C:\ prompt type the following and hit enter

sfc /scannow

Then reboot and try the repair/reinstall again.

If you have done the above steps and still can not access the Internet, then
I suggest that you try the following, it you have not already done so:

From the Start menu, select Search, select All Files and Folders.
Select More Advanced Options and place a checkmark beside Search Hidden
Files and Folders option.
Ensure that Search System Folders and Search Subfolders are also checked.
In the All or Part of the File Name box, type ie.inf
In the Look In drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive
that contains the Windows folder.
Click the Search button.
In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in Windows\Infb
folder.
Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.
Reboot the computer when the file copy process is complete.

How to Repair Internet Explorer 6 and Outlook Express
Tricking Windows into letting you reinstall IE6
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=71

Since you already have Internet Explorer 6 installed the operating system
will not allow you to reinstall over the existing installation. Due to this
we are required to trick the operating system into thinking IE 6 is not
installed.

### NOTE: in order to use this method you are required to edit the
registry. **Incorrect editing of the registry can cause serious harm to your
operating system** so it is advised you proceed with extreme caution.###

Follow these steps for repairing Internet Explorer 6:

Click on the Start button and then click on the Run option.
In the Open field type regedit and press the OK button.
Navigate to the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active
Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
Under that key you will see a entry named IsInstalled. Right click on that
entry and left click on Modify.
Change the Value from 1 to 0.
Exit regedit.

Hi troy :)

If none of the other information resolves the issue, then I highly suggest
that you do a repair/reinstall of the IE. It may be that there are
corrupted or damaged files and you need to replace them with a
repair/reinstall. Here is the information on how to do the repair/reinstall
for XP. You will need to visit the Windows Update site immediately
afterward and reinstall any required updates.

XP users who have installed IE6sp1 before upgrading to XPsp1
will have setupwbv.dll and will be able to do a repair using

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

Otherwise, they have to use

sfc /scannow

etc., or reinstall IE6 (Ref: KB318378)

Have you uninstalled Zone Alarm? Make sure that the TrueVector Monitor is
not still being loaded... Check your services...

I've had the same issue. At least three customers have had the ability to
see a web site, but then poof, get the "Page cannot be displayed..." DNS
error. They keep clicking refresh, and it eventually comes up. Then right
away be gone on the next refresh. I've dug around and not found much as far
as solid advice on fixing this issue. Could be several issues.

I've found the common points between customers are:
They have Windows XP (Pro or Home) with Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed.
They are using routers (one satellite customer, two cable modem customers).
They use a spyware removal program.
The web-page will display if refreshed often enough.
It happens regardless of which internet browser is used.
No problems with downloads or email. Autoupdates work.

All customers have been checked for the basic fixes and modifications.

Seems directly related to DNS. The status area of the browser will give all
indications that it's connecting ("Opening page http:www.pagename.com"),
then, plop, right to the page that "cannot be found."

The error can be readily recreated.

This is tough issue. Anyone found something new?
