OK, this is very frustrating. I have seen the many posts regarding this
issue and have exhausted all possibilities known to me. This is what I have
done so far.

-asjusted all forms of internet security to lowest levels of protection
-added site to trusted site list
-added site to 'managed sited' for cookie handeling and chose always allow
-added site to trusted in firewall (zone alarm)
-manualy deleted temp internet files
-manualy deleted history
-manualy deleted cookies
-ran spybot
-ran ad-aware
-ran Winsock XP Fix
-ran registry mechanic (trial version)
-ran window washer 5
-ran antivirus software
-ran ipconfig

All programs I ran were the latest versions. I still have the same problem.
I even ran these in safe mode just to make sure. To be specific, I am
trying to access 'www.pinnacle.com' & 'webboard.pinnacle .com'. These are
sites I visit very regularly, and have had no problems until a few days ago.
I have not executed any Windows updates or anything like that recently, just
updated all my protection software. I have XP SP2 and IE 6, and have had
them for quite a while now.

What am I missing?

Check C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc for a file named HOSTS with no
extension. (Not Hosts.sam)
Make sure Windows is set to show hidden files and folders and is NOT set to
hide extensions for known file types.
If HOSTS exists, rename it to HOSTS.OLD
Reboot an try again.

Or, In a Cmd window, enter
ipconfig /flushdns
then clear your TIF also, and re-boot.

How long before you get the "page not found" placeholder page? I think
IE has a 5-minute timeout. If the web site to which you are navigating
is severely busy, like with many users downloading pages or files or
from a [D]DOS attack, then your browser might be timing out trying to
reach an unresponsive site. The site was working before but doesn't
work now, so it could be a problem with that site or one of the hosts in
the route to that site. If other users tell you they have no problems
accessing that site then ask them to send you a copy of their traceroute
as you might find a host unique to you that is causing the problem or,
if everyone incurs the problem, then you might find a common host
causing the problem. I don't have a problem with that site (other than
they employ a lot of Javascript) and my traceroute to them is:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms <myIPaddrs>
2 16 ms 11 ms 25 ms <mycablemodemIPaddrs>
3 11 ms 11 ms 12 ms bar01-f1-1-0.broohe1.mn.attbb.net
[24.31.1.141]
4 13 ms 11 ms 14 ms 24.31.2.105
5 23 ms 34 ms 28 ms 12.118.239.169
6 22 ms 23 ms 37 ms tbr1-p012301.cgcil.ip.att.net
[12.123.6.9]
7 29 ms 29 ms 30 ms ar1-p300.clboh.ip.att.net
[12.123.210.37]
8 37 ms 34 ms 36 ms 12.126.252.106 <-- this is also att.net
9 54 ms 36 ms 35 ms superbee.pinnacle.com [12.32.71.232]

There is only one hop between my domain (att.net) and theirs. See if
you have something between your ISP's domain and Pinnacle's domain.

Stop using the webnews-for-dummies interface and use a real newsreader,
like Outlook Express, Forte, Thunderbird, or Xnews. Then you can flag a
message so you can continue to watch it rather than add a superfluous
"me too" post to the thread. If you are not adding to the thread then
just *watch* it. Please read http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1855.html,
section 3.1.3, which says, "Avoid posting "Me Too" messages, where
content is limited to agreement with previous posts." The OP (original
poster) was not taking a poll to count how many other users have the
same problem.

Jenkins,

I was in the same place and I finally decided to uninstall SP2 and BANG IE
starting working. The difference with me is that I just installed SP2 which
made me decide to uninstall it. Keep in mind that I have Norton Internet
Firewall and Scansweeper which I know they didn't contribute to this problem.

I tried the Hosts.old thing and nothing has changed. I also cleared my TIF
and rand ipconfig \flushdns w/ reboot. Still same thing...

I know the site is up and running fine because I was able to contact thier
"support" through email. I explained my problem and I was assured that the
server was fine. In fact the only answer I got was "make sure you are typing
the address correctly". Some support that is!

I even had my neighbor access pinnacle site and he did so with no problem.
He hasn't loaded sp2 yet has decieded not to.
There sure is something going on with IE6 and sp2 and pinnacle web site.
I even tried pinging their site and it just times out.
If anyone has any suggestions sure would like to here from you.

trying to access 'www.pinnacle.com' & 'webboard.pinnacle .com'.
What am I missing?

The right name? ;)

http://webboard.pinnaclesys.com/

BTW in order to find http://www.pinnacle.com/

I had to resort to using nslookup to use that domain's nameserver.
My DNS had no record of that server only the domain name.
Even using that domain's nameserver I could find no reference
for a webboard.pinnacle.com. Once I had found the name with
that domain's nameserver my DNS finally had it too.

Hint: in order to see the other domain name's nameserver
I used nslookup in its interactive mode and used its subcommand

set type=any

YMMV

OK, first of all it's pinnacleSYS.com

Second, I'm not sure where this thread is going, but it's not being very
helpfull at this point. I don't want to sound ungratefull or anything but I
think it's absolutely rediculous that there is only ONE domian that I can't
access and NOBODY can give me a difinitive answer why. I understand that
this is not exactly an easy problem to fix, but why is mine impossible?!

Did you check your HOSTS file?

Yes I did. And, as I said before, nothing changed.

Does the fact that I have more than one user (one administrator, 2 limited)
on XP Home make a difference? All are affected by this problem

If it were the HOSTS file it would affect all users. Since it isn't, I
don't know what's wrong.

Is my issue dead in the water? Would re-installing IE help? I need
something here...

I am running on a home network, if that helps. I am starting to think that
that is the problem. Neither if the two computers on the network can access
the site. The network has been in place for quite some time before the
problem arose and I have made no modifications since the last time I accessed.
