Something wong with Service Pack 2 for internet access

Hi,
I posted a message earlier. I have a very bad problem. I run Windows XP Pro
SP 2.
It happened several times when I started my home computer I got error
message"Generic Host Process has encountered a problem and needs to be
closed. We are sorry..."
After sending the error report I was directed to here
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/response.aspx?SGD=adc7cb45-ad3a-4a4e-8d6e-3934fe93462e&SID=1501
and was asked to download a fix for it. Till then I lose internet connection
suddenly in the midst of surfing. I then ran scan by MS AntiSpyware and found
some Add tools. I quarantined those. Restarted but had the problem still
then. I then tried pinging the sites and found e.g., "www.yahoo.com could not
be found."
It did no effect by running "ipconfig /flushdns" and "netsh Winsock reset".
So I reinstalled XP. It got ok. But again after few days it was back. Before
that time I installed nothing so I had no adware, spyware or other malware
then. At that time I used to get the generic host process error message. I
then reinstalled SP2, now the problem is gone but I fear it may come back
again as it did so previously.

I run Norton Antivirus 2005 and Zone Alarm. All were going very good untill
I installed SP2.
I need to know the cause and the solution as it may come back again. Please
help.

Try to find out which service is failing.
Is there a message in the Event Viewer System log which identifies it?

One diagnostic you could try would be to make a list of the services
which you normally have running and then compare with what is running
after you encounter a problem.

Here would be one way to do that. Enter in a cmd window
tasklist /svc /fi "Imagename eq svchost.exe"

Based on your symptom my guess would be that your DHCP client
had died or became corrupted.

If you suspected that service (or any service you knew the name of)
you could use the sc command for more clues. E.g. enter:

sc queryex dhcp

I don't know exactly what the recovery procedure would be for that
circumstance and this is not the best newsgroup to try to find that out
anyway.

Thanks Robert,
There is no error message for any service in the event viewer. But every now
and then I am loosing internet connection. I flushed dns resolved cache by
"ipconfig /flushdns" and reset the winsock from "netsh winsock reset" command
and I can access internet now. Right now to write this reply when I just
clicked on "Reply" link I found "page cannot be displayed message". I reset
those mentioned above and can write here again. But this is not going well
with me. I don't know what to do next.

I get something like that occasionally on Dial-up.
When it happens I open a cmd window and check with
nslookup
(i.e. without attempting a specific lookup)
That puts me in nslookup's subcommand mode
but more importantly depending on how nslookup reacts
I can tell whether I still have a good connection or not.
If it's bad there will be an indication that neither DNS addresses
were themselves resolvable. (Usually I get a two-line report with
just the first DNS address and its name. YMMV.)

So, if it's bad I just exit nslookup and then enter
rasdial /d
to hangup so I can redial.

BTW certain third-party toolbars are known to have strange DNS-related
effects. Try removing any such products you may have.

Well, dhcp is running as seen by the command
I have only yahoo toolbar and I think it has no such effect. Well, thanks for
all your help. I have to find more related group about this topic.

You mean normally or when you have a problem symptom?

BTW it may help if you clarify your problem symptoms.
Previously you described it as a browser window
"not responding while trying to close it"
Then as "Generic Host process for Win32 which encounterrs
an error each time I shut down"
Now it's "when I started my home computer I got error message
Generic Host Process has encountered a problem and needs to be closed."

I only mentioned dhcp and the tasklist diagnostic
for the "when I started..." case.

BTW did you try my nslookup test during a problem incident?
I have only yahoo toolbar and I think it has no such effect.

I'd try getting rid of it anyway. The typical symptom that it may cause
is an inability to launch in a new window. So it is known to have unexpected
effects. Who knows what they all might be? Simple enough to test?

Well,thanks for all your help.

You're welcome.

I have to find more related group about this topic.

Good plan. Please report back here if you find out something useful
about your symptom(s).

Good luck

Yes, that is also during problem symptoms. Not in normal state.
Then as "Generic Host process for Win32 which encounterrs
an error each time I shut down"
Now it's "when I started my home computer I got error message
Generic Host Process has encountered a problem and needs to be closed."

That happens normally or even when there is problem.
BTW did you try my nslookup test during a problem incident?

It shows me my default server and address of default gateway. What's next?

Thanks, I tried removing it but it cannot restrict the problem coming.

Good luck

Hi Robert,
within last two days I am not finding the problem coming in again.
I contacted my ISP and they reported that they might have any problem with
their outage. So its ok still now.

Thank you again.
