remove secondary harddrive

What am I doing wrong?

When I remove my secondary hard drive and try to
access "My Computer" - the window opens up and a flashlight
(panning back and forth) appears in the middle. I let this
go on for about 10min.

When I stick the hard drive back in and try to open "My
Computer" it pops up right away.

Silly question, did you reboot after removing your secondary hard drive?
What kind of the rack are you using for your secondary hdd?

Best regards,

This sounds like you have something installed on the drive
that you have removed that is still registered with the
windows boot drive. I recommend you replace your drive and
uninstall anything that was using the drive. The
flashlight is telling you that windows is trying to locate
a file/drive and is searching for it. Do you have the
drive copied to your desktop as a shortcut, or into the
quick start bar at the bottom of your screen (next to the
start button). There are quite a few reasons this could be
happening but the ones I have described above would seem
to be the main reasons for your machine to be searching
for a drive/program.
