registry problems

In my registry, what is safe to delete - ex: missing dll's, active x, unused
something or other. My comptuer is acting so funny. I have done all the
regular cleaning. Sometimes IE will open, sometimes not, sometimes it is
really slow. I had deleted registry items and am going back and adding them
back in to see if that will help. I know now I shouldn't mess with it, but I
am always trying to keep my computer as clean as possible for maximum
performance. My cable modem is registering at 10,000, so that is ok. I am
just in a dilemna right now not knowing waht to do.
Would appreciate any suggestions.

At first I want to let You know what you already knew...only if you are
experienced user with the regestry you may try to modify keys...otherwise
live the regestry alone because you may damage your os...

second: to keep you computer runing in the best condition you need to do the
following.
1-you need an antivirus programs, if you don't have one here are some free:

Avasta home edition: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

AVG free edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5

2- Get antispyware programs (2 free will be OK):

Ad-Adware SE personal..... http://www.lavasoft.com/

Spywareblaster... http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbdownload.html

Ewido free......http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

3-Keep your computer updated (antivirus programs, Microsoft updates,
antispyware)

4-A least once a week scan your computer

5-Run the internet as limited user and not as full user (this avoid malware
to be installed easy)

6- if you feel that you antivirus fail do, a free online scan to verefy
results:

http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html

http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

7- Because you been working with the regedit do this to repair:

keeping your windows install cd with you do the following
start – run – type or copy/paste: sf /scannow (press enter)
is going to ask for instalation cd, in about 15-30 minutes is going to finish

8- liminated those program that are runing in the background:

go to your Startup folder on your Start Menu by right clicking on the Start
button and going to Explore. Double click on Programs, then double click on
Startup. Look for any programs that are not necessary, click on them, and
press the delete key (you may want to instead drag and drop them to your
desktop in case it later turns out that you need them (then you can just drag
them back).

You need to learn how to backup your regestry and use regestry:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256986

http://technet2.microsoft.com/Windo...03f3-45e9-9edb-ece32ba6a75f1033.mspx?mfr=true

eventually when you feel confident and learn how to back up registry you can
eliminated those programs that you don't want.

Elimination of start up programs in regedit:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/RunOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/RunOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/RunServices

Elimination of startup programs a nivel of msconfig
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/SharedTools/MsConfig/Startupreg
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/SharedTools/MsConfig/StartupFolder
deleted subkeys

This is a great oversimplication Despite the number of people who
constantly repeat that more RAM is better, that's true only up to a point,
and where that point is is different for different users.

This is *not* a one-size-fits-all situation. You get good performance if the
amount of RAM you have keeps you from using the page file, and that depends
on what apps you run. Most people running a typical range of business
applications find that somewhere around 256-384MB works well, others need
512MB. Almost anyone will see poor performance with less than 256MB. Some
people, particularly those doing things like editing large photographic
images, can see a performance boost by adding even more than
512MB--sometimes much more.

If you are currently using the page file significantly, more memory will
decrease or eliminate that usage, and improve your performance. If you are
not using the page file significantly, more memory will do nothing for you.
Go to http://billsway.com/notes_public/winxp_tweaks/ and download
WinXP-2K_Pagefile.zip and monitor your pagefile usage. That should give you
a good idea of whether more memory can help, and if so, how much more.

Very few people, unless they are using memory-humgry programs like
PhotoShop, can make effective use of as much as 1024MB, let alone the "more
than 1024 Mb" that you say is excellent. The only thing in your message that
I agree with is that 128MB is too little for everybody.
