TaskBar Time Problems

Because I was going out for a few hours, I turned off my Dell computer and
pressed the off button on the power bar. I know that when I do that the time
always resets to April 23, 2003 midnight so when the system asked me if I
wanted to access setup I did, and the System Date/Time were wrong so I
corrected them and resumed starting the computer. But now the time is acting
all funny. When I turn off the computer, it appears to stop and when I start
the computer again it starts where it left off. Sometimes it lags behind the
real time too. I've tried synchronizing, and it's always successful in
bringing the computer back to the correct time, but the problems keep on
happening. What's going on? I use Windows XP.

Possible bad battery on the motherboard (CMOS battery.)

Replace it with a new one - cheap way to see if that is the issue and
doesn't hurt anything.

How To Ask Questions The Smart Way

Thanks. This was helpful, but the motherboard batteries cost around $100! I'll have to think about it. Thanks again.

Wha?!

Unless you have some sort of *old* motherboard or something extremely
special - it should be available at Wal~Mart, Radio Shack, etc. (Usually a
"coin cell" type...)
