No, I was not. I was trying to determine that support path for the
installation before I commented on how to get support.
Leythos is assuming piracy.

No, I was trying to determine who the Op should ask for specific
support.
And why should she do this instead of USING her computer? Why do you
think it's OK to spend hours trying to sort out a problem caused by MS
and their greedy you-are-a-thief-until-you-prove-otherwise trip?

Because we don't really know if this was caused by Microsoft or by some
other problem - and you can whine all you want, but there are a couple
things that could have resulted in this specific problem.

How about you try and HELP the OP instead of spreading your BS more?

I'm sure this is exactly what the OP wants to do instead of using his or
her computer. Seems like an inconvenience to me and a whole lot of scary
stuff to do for a newbie but as long as MS keeps getting rich, you don't
care about that, do you?

It's good to see that you have NO INTEREST IN HELPING THE OP. Is it that
you have no technical skills that causes you to act like this? If you
put half that cynical energy into helping people in this group, you
might actually do something nice for someone.

Oh, and the above is not because of something Microsoft DID TO THE OP,
it's a fix for a problem caused by something that the OP did.

And what compromise or serious problem could possibly cause this other
than having the WPA program on the computer?

Like I always say, WPA and WGA only inconvenience the paying customer
and don't affect the pirates on iota.

Alias

Yep, real paying customers are the one's that get screwed by
copy-protection.

Reboot your computer into "Safe Mode".
While in Safe Mode, rename the wpa.dbl and wpa.bak files located in the
\Windows\system32 folder.

This will force activation on the following boot,
but should remove the message that you are already activated message.
Sometimes if these files get corrupted, they can cause this type of problem.

Your client is a "casual pirate". A true pirate wouldn't bother with
the likes of you and the one who sold your client the pirated XP, of
course!

A person who knowingly uses pirated software is a pirate. That's like saying
a shoplifter who only steals one item is a casual shoplifter and hasn't
really done anything wrong.

LOL! A software pirate is someone who sells pirated software. Someone
who buys pirated software is receiving stolen goods at most. Usually,
people who buy pirated software don't know that they are buying pirated
software.

Hi Carey
I tried that - no joy.
I have given up and sent it off to the nearest computer guy to reinstall or
reformat.
I only had one day left to try everything suggested.
Thanks anyway.

Hi Alias
Ha ha ha - I agree with you!!! MS makes me feel so guilty!!
I cannot make it through all those scarey instructions - I only had today to
sort it out before it self-implodes, (for all I know). So I have taken it to
the only guy on the island who runs a computer business, and asked him to
reinstall Win2000 (apparently it does not require activation) Hopefully I
will not lose too much important information (my hubby will go through the
roof, as it is his work on it).
As to returning it to the company that sold it to me - I have long since
moved countries, otherwise, of course I would have contacted them (and pay
them to fix it) (!!!)
I understand Leythos only wants to help, but really, I spend more of my
precious time trying to iron out problems, than I can afford to. It drives me
nuts that I have to be some computer boffin, just in order to keep my
computer up and running, and not doing what I got the computer for in the
first place !!
I am very sorry there is not a better solution for us. If costs were lower,
I would treat it all differently, as a dispensible/replaceble thing, like a
toaster or a kettle. I really don't need to become an electrician just to
keep my kettle working, when my business is selling tea.
All the best, and thanks again
Lori-Ann (defeated!)

If MS would drop the WPA scam, there would be no problem and she could
use her computer to do what she wants and not be forced by MS to try the
geeky things you suggest that may or may not work.

Here is something that may help with your problem, this was not
written
by me, but it has a lot of detail and seems correct:

1. Boot in Safe mode

2. Search for Reset5.bat files and delete them

3. Click Start / Run, type cmd

4. Type cd \windows\system32

5. Run the following commands: (D should be the location of your
Win XP
media CD)

expand d:\i386\licwmi.dl_ c:\windows\system32

expand d:\i386\regwizc.dl_ c:\windows\system32

expand d:\i386\licdll.dl_ c:\windows\system32

expand d:\i386\wpabaln.ex_ c:\windows\system32

ren wpa.dbl wpa.old

expand d:\i386\wpa.db_ c:\windows\system32

copy c:\windows\system32\licwmi.dll c:\windows\system32\dllcache

copy c:\windows\system32\regwizc.dll c:\windows\system32\dllcache

copy c:\windows\system32\licdll.dll c:\windows\system32\dllcache

copy c:\windows\system32\wpabaln.exe c:\windows\system32\dllcache

regsvr32.exe licwmi.dll

regsvr32.exe regwizc.dll

regsvr32.exe licdll.dll

exit

6. Click Start / Run, type inf

7. Locate the file oobe.inf

8. Right click the file and choose Install

9. Click Start / Run, type regedit

10. Locate the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\wpaevents

11. Open the key OOBETimer and change its value (just delete some
numbers)

12. Restart the server and activate it

You forgot: stand on your left foot while placing your right elbow
in your left ear.

I know that what I have installed is legit, not because of some scammy
WPA/WGA program but because I know who I bought it from and what their
business practices are.

And their business practices are to give you no OS CD?
Knowing that, you buy from them anyway?

I don't buy computers with an OS pre-installed. I build my own and, yes,
I have the CDs.

The computer came with the XP loaded, so no disk.
