I moved my dual boot PC between rooms. I also now have the sound hooked up
to spdif port and video to a s-video port. XP had been running just fine
before the move. The only hardware change is the addition of a usb wireless-n
adapter. When I started up the box in the new location I received a message
right at the splash screen saying the copy of xp needed to be activated. I
clicked okay, the message disappeared and the screen went blank. The splash
screen came up again with another activation warning but in a different
"box". I clicked okay to activate now and another opened saying xp was
already activated. The log in screen then appeared, which had never appeared
before, and I select the one and only user icon. The xp desktop appears and
another activation needed window opens. The exact same one as the one at the
splash screen. I again click on okay and once more the already activated
window once more pops up. I click on the okay button to exit and I'm taking
back to the select user screen.

I saw the kludge located at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312295/en-us but
it seems odd that after 5 years xp would decide it needs to be activated.
The suggested fix calls for running some code from the RUN screen, but I
can't even get that far. The windows pop up before the desktop even populates
with the icons. Is there anything else to be done?

Moving PCs will not change whatever is installed but malware/viruses will.
Try rebooting in Safe Mode, then give the machine a complete scan.

I moved my dual boot PC...

1. Assuming WinXP's installed on one partition, what Windows version is
installed on the other and which was installed first?

On the WinXP partition in question:

2. Is WinXP SP3 installed and is the computer fully patched at Windows
Update?

3. What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

4. Has a(nother) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer?

5. Did a Norton or McAfee free-trial come preinstalled on the computer when
you bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)

Run the "SYSPREP" command from the recovery console, it will restore the
"activation needed within 30 days" prompt. Then, when Windows start, all
you have to do is to activate like you would on a new installation.
