PTEDIT32 under XP

Does PowerQuest's PTEDIT32 run under WinXP Pro?

It reports error #5 or #7 when I try to run it as administrator.

Yes, ptedit32 should work on XP. You might try re-downloading the app -
perhaps it's corrupt. I don't know if PowerQuest supports this free utility,
but you might try calling their support line.

Also, try finding and putting ptvxd.vxd in your windows\system folder.

Hope this helps.

I am using a recently downloaded copy of PTEDIT32.

Unfortunately this doesn't help.

I get error message 5. At this PowerQuest web page
http://www.powerquest.com/support/primus/id4374.cfm
it says error 5 is either

"Error finding VFLOPPY.SYS booting up."
"Error 5 Can't copy file"

althought PQ probably doesn't bother listing any error messages
specific to a free utility like PTEDIT32.

From where?
I found one at ftp://ftp.powerquest.com/pub/utilities/PTEDIT32.zip
but it only contains PTEDIT32.exe.
It says it needs PQVXD.vxd, which of course, I don't have.

It doesn't work for me on 2K, I get error 5 too.

VxDs are not used on 2K/XP.

Weird, is EZ drive installed, or did you 'set-up' the drive using any tools
that came with the drive?

I'm using a boot manager which has replaced the standard MBR for its
own MBR and then it has some of its own proprietary code in the rest
of cylinder 0.

However I can run PTEDIT32 successfully when I boot off a Win98
partition on the same hard drive.

Any ideas?

Why don't you just use a boot disk and run the DOS version of ptedit?

Error code 5 means Access Denied and 7 means some memory contol has been destroyed (7 can mean a bad disk, memory, or cache memory
but more likely).

Possibly because it can't use a vxd. vxd allow dos applications to access hardware. Also 16 bit vxds can't be used either.

That is very enlightning and makes total sense.
Which of course is to be expected from a MVP.

So where can I download that PTEDIT32.exe including the vxd?

The PTEDIT32 I used was downloaded direct from PowerQuest at

ftp://ftp.powerquest.com/pub/utilities/

Doesn't work on my XP.

Right, just as where I said I downloaded it from.
That one doesn't work on my Windows98. Says it needs PQVXD.VXD

I think it assumes that you have installed some PowerQuest product
before it will work. Apparently you did that on W98 but not on XP.

Anyone happen to know a small download that has pqvxd.vxd in it?

Graag. Instructions as to where to put it, also appreciated.
I supplied it a fake pqvxd.vxd but the error didn't change at all.

I was directed via email (thanks)

Sadly this still doesn't work for me. I put that PQVXD.VXD into
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM (and also into C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 for good
measure).

For me PTEDIT32 (from the PQ site) still fails with an error #5.

Does it work on your system?

Am using XP Pro with SP1 and with all critical security patches.

ISTR there was a thread about something similar in this group last
year but it didn't seem very conclusive. http://snurl.com/27v9

Because Win 2k/xp cannot load VxDs. Didn't I say the a few days ago?

Why not just use ptedit in Windows 98?

If it doesn't complain about the vxd then that isn't the problem.
Does it work on your system?

It does now for me in Win98 (which is all that I have) and
putting it in the same folder as PTEDIT32 is sufficient.
It appears that partin9x.exe (PartInfo for windows9x) is
also using that vxd.

I don't know what it is that you may (or may not) need for XP.
It may even be a bug that only shows up in your system but since
Eric had the same experience it's probably something to do with
some component missing or some access right violation.

For a most obscure reason actually.

I am using a very old (but perfectly working) Philips 20" single fre-
quency 48kHz monitor with a special single frequency bios video card.
PTEDIT wants fullscreen DOS mode 640*480 which currently doesn't dis-
play well. Another problem is that the screen isn't refreshed all the time
which may or may_not also be a problem caused by the single frequency bios.

I can probably fix all that but PTEDIT32 runs in a window and doesn't
give me any problems. Call me lazy.
