Problem with SP4 install

Okay, let me try to explain this. I am installing Win2000 on an old system
that ran win98SE on a hard drive that is 40gigs. I install WIn 2000, all
goes well. I install drivers for modem, sound card and NIC. Win2000 boots
with no problem. I then install Zonealarm so I can go on line and update
2000 with SP4. The install of SP4 seems to go well, but when the system
boots after the install, I get a blue screen that tells me I have a problem
with the had drive. To uninstall any hardware that is new, run chkdsk /f.

How do I run chkdsk /f from Win 2000 when I can get it booted?

Earlier, I installed win 2000 to the system on an old 8.6gig HDD. The 40
Gig was for files and apps. Win 2000 loaded okay. I checked for the HDD
and their size, all was okay. I loaded ZoneAlarm, downoaded win 2000SP4.
It installed. It ran but the 40 Gig drive then reported a sive of only 7.6
gigs.

What I'm I doing wrong, how can I get the system to boot beyound the blue
screen?
