New install of SUS auto update client fails to install with Win2000 SP4

When I try to do a new install of the MS SUS auto update
client on a system running Win 2000 SP4, the install fails
with the msg: "MS Windows Update Auto Update requires
Windows 2000 SP2 or Windows XP." Does anybody know of a
fix to this? I had used the latest version: WUAU22.msi

Gene,
I had the same problem. Here is the fix I found at
eventid.net:

Source MsiInstaller
Type Error
Description The description for Event ID (10000) in
Source (MsiInstaller) cannot be found. The local computer
may not have the necessary registry information or
message DLL files to display messages from a remote
computer. The following information is part of the event:
Product: Microsoft Windows Update Auto Update --
Microsoft Windows Update Auto Update requires Windows
2000 SP2 or Windows XP.; (NULL); (NULL); (NULL); (NULL);
(NULL).
Comments Paul Hutchinson (Last update 5/8/2003):
You get this error when you try to install the
downloadable Windows Update client from the Microsoft
website and use that .MSI file to distribute through
Active Directory Group Policy onto a Workstation/Server
running either Windows 2000 SP3 or Windows XP SP1. You
use that client only if you have Windows 2000 SP2 or
Windows XP no SP3. Windows 2000 SP3 and Windows XP SP1
already have the new Client changes incorporated and
automatically installed during the Service Pack
installation. To solve this issue, remove the Windows
Update Client from the Group Policy Object.

WUAU22.msi is for Win2000-SP2 & WinXP-noSP as it says.

The Automatic Update client is already included in Win2000-SP3+ / WinXP-SP1+
/ Win2003, no separate client installation is required.

win2000 service pack 3 or later does not need the sus
client. the windows update client in the control panel
will do it for you. You will have to do a reg-hack to
point the client machine to the correct server. Download
the sus white paper and get the correct reg-hack. Dan
