Palm HotSync with IR Problem

I'm trying to configure my Palm device to hotsync with the IR port on my
laptop. I've made the device changes (local hotsync with IR as the
selection) and laptop changes (selected Hotsync from system tray and selected
Infrared as an option). Each time I try to sync, an error on the handheld
reads:

"Unable to initiate HotSync operation because the port is in use by another
application"

Any ideas why this is occurring?

Yup, the "Beam receive" and HotSync applications on the Palm conflict in the
presence of the Windows machine. To avoid this, start the HotSync on the
Palm *before* bringing it into range of the PC (yes really ).
