thanks for the quick reply. yes, windows mail was closed. i just tried it
again and got the same error message.

Restart the machine and run WMUtil without ever opening WinMail.

Does that happen when you open WMUtil or when you click on a button? Does
the program open okay?

it happens when i try to run WMUtil, so the program never opens. instead, i
get the following: "WMUtil has stopped working. A problem caused the program
to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a
solution is
available."

i've tried to run WMUtil after restarting my computer, without having opened
Windows Mail, but to no avail. also, both of the files have been unzipped
correctly into the same folder on my desktop. should the folder be on my c
drive in order to work?

What other software is running at boot? Try disabling the startup items and
see if that has an effect.

i'm not very techno-savvy, so should i be looking at the windows task manager
to determine what's running and what to close or do i need to take a look at
what's running while the computer is actually booting up by pressing F12, etc?

thanks!

Click Start, then type "msconfig" (without the quotes), wait for msconfig.exe
to appear as the top result, hit Enter. Go to its Startup tab.

Providing the instructions are followed.
There are a remarkable number of users who somehow
manage not to see them although they have been highlit
in large text and with a red border.

It puts into context the trouble some people have in setting
up their email facilities... not RTFM and trusting to luck.

here's what's running at startup: Windows Defender, Synaptics Pointing
Device, SiteAdvisor (McAfee), McAfee SpamKiller, Google Desktop, BigFix
(BigFix, Inc.), StartCCC.

i've disabled these startup items and checked to make sure WinMail.exe is
disabled. i've deleted the version of WMUtil that i had on my desktop and
downloaded it again, this time to my c drive. i still can't get the program
to open; windows gives me the same error message!

is the problem a lost cause?

When you say you have disbled WinMail.exe...
have you checked both applications and processes in Taskmgr?

for some reason neither i nor my tekkie husband can get the utility to even
run so i'm basically stuck without the ability to send email via windows
mail. i've tried working this out with microsoft directly and they tell me to
work with gateway, my computer manufacturer, since my version of vista is
OEM. when i call gateway, they tell me they're limited in what they support
and that they can't help me. this is absolutely unacceptable! if i had any
inkling that i would be left without tech support LESS THAN A MONTH AFTER
PURCHASING MY LAPTOP i would have bought a mac!

I'm having the same difficulty. I cannot purge or delete a message from my
outbox. I've tried to download Gary's wmulti, and it didn't work me either.

It keeps stating that it is a windows mail error.. an error has occurred.
Someone please offer some good advice. Thanks.

Switching from Vista to a Linux variant is like jumping from the frying
pan into the fire! I know, having tried various Linux distros.
This would be especially difficult to do for the average Windows user
who has no idea what terms like "root" or "sudo" mean.

I followed your instructions below, but the "clear outbox" option is greyed
out. I'm not able to choose that option. I don't have Windows Mail open and
it says to close Windows Mail to enable. Any suggestions?

The Control-Shift-Escape instructions fixed it for me after hours of
frustration trying to read through these posts. THANK YOU Steve and/or
Gary!!!
