Opera vs Mozilla browser?

I can't reproduce that, so I'm not sure how to help. I cannot
delete the Bookmarks Toolbar Folder; the delete option is greyed
out for that folder, and the delete key does nothing. It is
possible to create more than one folder with that name, but only
that one works. In bookmarks.html (in the profile directory),
viewing the source of a new profile I just created, it looks like
there is indeed a special marker of the Bookmarks Toolbar Folder:

<DT><H3 PERSONAL_TOOLBAR_FOLDER="true" ID="rdf:#$ds8KK2">Bookmarks Toolbar Folder</H3>

I don't know what to suggest other than looking at the source of
your bookmarks.html and trying to figure out how to edit it.

Of you could create a new profile (running Firefox with the -p switch
will bring up the profile management dialog) and then copy the newly
created bookmarks.html to your old profile.

I found the solution!!! It doesn't matter that I deleted that folder,
when in the bookmarks manager (BOOKMARKS > MANAGE BOOKMARSK from main
Firefox interface), one can click on any folder there that one wants
to use as the IE LINKS-style folder and once it's selected, then click
VIEW > SET AS BOOKMARKS TOOLBAR FOLDER! Voilà! I had my Links
toolbar! Unfortunately, one thing I haven't gotten around is the
icons. In IE, all the bookmarks are just shortcut files so it's so
easy to change the icon. I'm looking for that functionality now. If
I can get that, then I'll be satisfied. Firefox _is_ great, but I
don't have the same functionality, completely, as IE. But it's a heck
of a lot better Netscape and it's more secure than IE at this point,
so I'll just have to learn to live with it.

We're lucky, though, to have such a great app to fall back on.

Cool. I guess I don't have that option because I already have a
folder set up that way, and there can be only one.

In Firebird 0.7 (and maybe in Firefox 0.8, I don't recall) there was
such functionality. You could get change the 'favicon' via the
properties view in the bookmark manager, pointing it to either an
icon on the web or one stored on a local drive. But it didn't work
very well, to say the least. I can only guess that they have
scrapped it for now, and I hope that it will reappear in 1.0.

For now, what I see is a favicon appearing in the toolbar once I
visit a site that has one, and persisting until I clear the cache.
If I can get that, then I'll

It's still only a 'technology preview.' ;)

Well, I've seen the discussions here for years but never got into
them. I'm an IE-convert and I just took care to keep my av software
up to date. Win98SE isn't supported anymore, as everyone knows, and
there will be no more updates for vulernabilities so due to the latest
problem from yesterday re IE, makes me think it is now definitely time
to switch. But which browser?

So I'd thought I'd take a poll, as it were, to get some pros and cons
for each before starting this whole evaluation, etc., process.

If anyone cares to comment on either, would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.

I've gone over to Mozilla Firefox.

It works fine, and I can do electronic transfers top and from my
bank accounts.

One small little quibble I have is that when downloading a file,
it automatically saves to the desktop rather than prompt me to
save it where I want.

Long time ago, I posted that I couldn't access my bank account with
Firebird/fox. I thought it was my bank's fault, and I even
threatened to take my money elsewhere, but it turned out to be
something wrong with my browser profile; it was fixed when I
created a new profile for some unrelated reason.

Tools|Downloads|Options. You can specify some other directory or
have FF prompt you for each file.

You can change that in Tools -> Options -> Downloads...

I just refuse to visit "IE required" sites. (1 or 2% of the sites).

And I like Opera because it gives me the feeling of control (a lot of options to
adjust).

PS: I don't want to start a holy war (Firefox x Opera).

People use what they are comfortable with. Instead of Opera I use
K-Meleon as a backup

If somebody wants to try Opera I have a few advices:

Download the latest version, 7.51 or 7.50 and install it.

Use Opera to download skin, Breeze II is the best and most popular.
Customize the toolbars, remove the useless one.

Go through the preferences and change the javascript options to block
all unwanted popups, and set font types and minimum sizes, turn off
sounds, etc..

nterestingly enough the advice on this page is now not necessary.

With firefox 0.9 and mozilla 1.7, all you need to do is to right click on
the form and select the option "add a keyword search for this search, and
you will be prompted to enter the keyword. Easy, no fuss no fuss.

Which form? I tried to right click on the page, on the Google field, ...,
didn't find that option. Maybe I need another capuccino... :-\

*change the bookmark toolbar link and folder icons to my own graphics*

Phew, after quite a bit of digging, I did manage to at least disable
the icons from displaying. That's a good thing as they kept changing
after I accessed the link. I'm guessing that it's like IE, once
you've been to a site, the favicon is available, so it displays (until
you clean out the cache <g>).

Anyway, to disable them, I created the user.js, as per instructions
(create a text file, rename to user.js and plug in the code. Then
file in the folder labelled "chrome".) In my case, the user.js file
went here:

C:\WINDOWS\Application
Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\default.yy7\chrome

My user.js just has these lines in them:

# Firefox User Preferences

// Disable Bookmark Icons
user_pref("browser.chrome.site_icons", false);
user_pref("browser.chrome.favicons", false);

It seems to work.

The rest of the code, on how to "associate" icons to each link so that
I have something like the ones in my old IE Links folder is beyond me
still. I'll try reading the instructions again on this another time
and perhaps then I'll be lucky and figure it out.

Wellll, it is very nice but themes are a matter of preference, of
course <g>. Personally, for my comfort zone, I'd like the IE-look
(http://themes.mozdev.org/themes/ie.html). But that one seems to be
unavailable for dl. Guess they didn't develop a version of this one
for Firefox v0.9 yet.

Thanks for this info! Much appreciated.

Very true! Fortunately for me I always save to the desktop so that
wasn't a problem, but I wondered if others wouldn't find that very
aggravating.

In the box where you would enter your search string.

More capuccino is a good idea whether you need it or not. ;)

Betcha there's an extension for that, though! <g>

Wrong, you can change it via the tools-->options-->download, click "ask me
where to save every file" :)

hmmm...always lots to learn! Thanks, Q...I will try the various
keyboard shortcuts in Firefox. I suspect they are still a bit easier
in Opera (one hand operation for most)...

If you do want to switch keyboard shortcuts to make them somewhat similar
to opera this extension keyconfig helps

Mozilla/FF has mouse gestures - just DL the Gestures extension -
http://optimoz.mozdev.org/gestures/

I got so used ot gestures that I wanted them for all my programs and
found Strokeit - http://www.tcbmi.com/strokeit/ - which gives me
gestures in any/every program!

I'm guessing that "gestures" might be shortcuts to mouse movements
(????), like hotkeys are to clicking, maybe? I don't think I'm
getting a grasp on this, still, so I thought I'd ask. What exactly
does this program do in terms of examples? How would having this
program benefit anyone? I can't seem to wrap my brain around
visualizing why it's so handy. It sounds like it might be, but a few
examples would help me relate.

Yep, it's just another form of command input. I like it because it wards
off carpal tunnel syndrome. Here's just one example...If I want to open a
new browser window, instead of going to the menu or using the keyboard, I
just drag my mouse down the screen while pressing the right mouse button.
It's a very natural gesture, and I can do it wherever on the screen where
it is most comfortable.

Interesting. I have a better idea now. It's worth looking into,
then.

Thanks.

Sure thing. Also, that should have read 'left' mouse button, though you
can choose any button you want...whatever works for you.
