Opera vs Mozilla browser?

B

Bob

You mean that browser which isn't actually a browser but modified IE
toolbars? And a browser that proudly boasts its secure as its based on
Internet Explorer which has more holes than Swiss cheese?

I agree that IE and the various shells have "more holes than Swiss cheese."
However it is possible in IE and the shells to change security settings,
which is what I have done. I've tried IE, the shells, Firefox, Mozilla,
Netscape, Opera and K-Meleon. My personal favorites are the IE shells with
the security settings changed.

Thanks.

They're offline. Here's the message:

Update - The forums machine cannot handle the load. We are in the
process of evaluating options. Until a solution is found, they will

I use mozilla - it has both of those.

Mozilla and Firefox, what's the difference as I'm getting confused

Also, if you actually do mean Firefox, the links item is the only
thing I haven't fixed yet.

Thanks.

Well, I've seen the discussions here for years but never got into
them. I'm an IE-convert and I just took care to keep my av software

there will be no more updates for vulernabilities so due to the latest
problem from yesterday re IE, makes me think it is now definitely time

So I'd thought I'd take a poll, as it were, to get some pros and cons
for each before starting this whole evaluation, etc., process.

If anyone cares to comment on either, would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.
Opera - can't beat the mouse gestures!

I just realized you were talking about Mozilla (I should try
reading the Subject), not Firefox, in most of what you said.
I'd already written some stuff about Firefox, so
I'll go ahead and send it. Can't hurt to have all three browsers
compared. :)
alt+arrow does this in Firefox, left or right arrow depending on
whether you want to go forward or back.

With Firefox, tapping the right arrow removes the highlight and
leaves the cursor at the right-hand side of whatever is in the
location bar.

There's a list of FF keyboard commands at the texturizer help site,
but it seems to be down at the moment. Google, google....
<http://www.mozilla.org/projects/help-viewer/docs/firebird/shortcuts.html>

hmmm...always lots to learn! Thanks, Q...I will try the various keyboard
shortcuts in Firefox. I suspect they are still a bit easier in Opera
(one hand operation for most)...and I will always have problems with the
slowish internal response of Firefox when using the 'back' button, as
compared to Opera's almost instant reaction....but I do like Firefox a
lot, (I like the bookmarks a LOT better than Opera's awkward system) and
I welcome improvements in Firefox operation....it has a lot of promise.

Hey, I wonder what do you guys think about Green Browser, I am
sure you guys must be aware of it. I have been using it for
almost the whole year after CrazyBrowser stop updating.

I found GB much more stable than MyIE and Avant In fact, I
found it rocks and its update comes constant (about every few
months). Small, quick, and green. I even put it in a floppy
and just drag it to whereever I go. I am surprised that not
much have been said about it in this group.

(didn't try other non-shell browser extensively as I didn't
want to have two big browser in the system).

I can't live without mouse gestures either. I use the All-In-One
Gestures extension with Firefox, which also includes rocker navigation
as well as various scrollwheel options. All-In-One's gestures are by
default pretty close to Opera's IIRC, and they can be redefined by the
user. By my quick count, All-In-One currently supports 59 gestures.

I've tried them all and should have mentioned that GreenBrowser is the
shell I use and like the best. The reasons I like it are (1) one finger
keybord ahortcuts of F1 (new page) and F4 (close page) (2) right click tabs
to add page to groups or assign URL alias (3) great on stopping popups (4)
doesn't add a bunch of stuff to the registry. Lots of other features, too,
but these are just a few reasons I really like GreenBrowser.

I think this is what you want, not sure as I don't know about IE's
links bar.

There is a special folder in bookmarks called the "Bookmarks Toolbar
Folder," and any bookmark in it will be displayed as a clickable link
on the bookmarks toolbar. You can also put subfolders in it, which
will appear on the toolbar as pull-down menus.

While I've got you looking in bookmarks, you may want to check out the
"Quick Search" feature. The help page for them talks about Mozilla,
but they work just as well in Firefox. I find them invaluable. For
example, if I wanted to search Google's archive of a.c.f for mentions
of firefox, I'd just type "acf firefox" in the location bar, and if I
wanted to pull up all of your posts, I'd type "acfauth fitwell".
<http://devedge.netscape.com/viewsource/2002/bookmarks/> looks a bit
daunting, but once you learn how, setting them up is a snap.

Firefox is just the browser part of the full Mozilla suite.

The browser that is part of the Mozilla suite is not Firefox. There
were plans to integrate Firefox and Thunderbird into the suite, but
I am not sure where they stand. I've given up trying to really
figure it out until they publish a new roadmap.

What about the adware, etc.

I've installed Firefox and it'll take some getting used to though I'm
okay with that. I used Netscape first for years before going back to
IE. It had 2 things I really use - save webpages completely and the
links toolbar.

Is there a Firefox forum of some sort somewhere? I'd like to learn
how to get something like the Links bar up as I can't live without
that.

Another thought, I'm guessing IE Text Archiver won't work on Firefox?
I'll need to find a solution to that as I use that quite extensively.

Anyway, thanks everyone. Looking forward to worrying less about IE
attacks. <g>
The links toolbar is now called your personal toolbar folder. You can
either save a bookmark there or drag a site from the address bar. Just
make sure it is checked under view - toolbars.

I used to like Opera before I heard of Firefox, then I found out about
Firefox, tried it, and dumped Opera immediately. Firefox rules!
THe only reason Firefox wins for me is its better compatibilty with
sites that seem to come up as "IE required" alot on Opera.

Wrong question!

Which operating system?
If I was buying a computer, 'twould be a Mac. Otherwise, I'd be looking
at switching to linux - oh wait - I already did that (thank $DEITY for

It's one of most user-friendly features of 'modern' browsers (MyIE2,
CrazyBrowser, Firefox, etc). Most of the time the default option
consists in opening a link in a new tab if the user clicks this link with
the scroll wheel (or middle button) of his mouse.

I just refuse to visit "IE required" sites. (1 or 2% of the sites).

And I like Opera because it gives me the feeling of control (a lot of options to
adjust).

PS: I don't want to start a holy war (Firefox x Opera).

Yes, the Firefox's Bookmarks Toolbar Folder is the analogueof the IE's Links
toolbar.

Excellent, thanks »Q«.
Could you also direct me to a NG dedicated to Firefox, since the italian
group it-alt.comp.software.mozilla is not much active?
