Occasional problem opening a program

Larc

I sometimes try to start a program when nothing seems to happen. The program
won't show up on the screen and Task Manager doesn't show that it's running.
However, if I try to shut down or reboot, XP has to shut down that invisible
program before it can close. In every case, the program is shown as "Not
responding" and has to be closed forcibly.

Anybody know a cure for this problem? It doesn't happen often, but can be a
real bother when it does. Rebooting usually clears everything up.

This has happened to four different programs, one being IE.

TIA!

Thanks, Kelly. AdAware, SpyBot and CWShredder report my system is clean except
for some unsuspicious Microsoft stuff SpyBot found. No virus either according
to NAV, which is completely up to date.

Maybe I should run sfc /scannow to check for and fix any messed up system files.
