Norton = avoid at all costs = malicious or just incompetent programmers?

I have always used bloated Symantec Norton (may they burn in hell)
SystemWorks, mostly for virus protection.

Recently, I installed SP2 on my three XP computers. I am now using
competently written anti-virus software from AVG, so after the SP2 install,
I uninstalled Symantec Norton (may they burn in hell) SystemWorks 2003 from
my laptop. After I uninstalled NSW 2003, neither Internet Explorer nor
Outlook Express nor Mozilla FireFox nor Thunderbird could connect to the
internet. Got a no connection available message. At the same time, the
wireless card's status showed good signal and my other wireless-equipped
laptop connected fine.

Today, I re-installed Symantec Norton (may they forever burn in hell) SW
2003 and, guess what, both e-mail clients and the two browsers now work.

Those morons at Symantec have their uninstall program screw up Windows XP
when you uninstall to punish you for uninstalling their crap...or just
because they are incompetent programmers.

I had a similar thing, actually even worse, almost nothing worked right,
happen when I tried to completely uninstall Norton (may they endlessly burn
in hell) SW 2003 on another computer XP (before SP2), following the
instructions off their web site. Thank God I had made a registry backup
earlier, and could restore the registry and get things back to normal.

No one should ever install any of their software on anything other than a
toilet seat.

Would I be right in thinking that you do not like Symantec, all
that much! ;-)

Mind you I fully understand and appreciate your comments, as
another who was forced into ditching (uninstalling)
Symantec/Norton software, after a they released a third live-
update, that almost stopped my PC from living and not to mention
nearly killed me, through STRESS & ANXIETY!

Well I un-installed all Symantec Software, and even though
computer is getting pre-historic in computer terms, I have to
admit that it works better, faster and more consistantly than it
did even on the day it was delivered, BUT then it did have NAV
pre-installed! :)

No doubt the "Nay Sayers" will add to this thread with the usual
shit, "well your computers must have been knackered from outset"

Well the truth is and I accept this, there are some people who
have have used Norton/Symantec products for years with out any
major problems, (well I used to be one such), there are also many
who have had major problems using them, that is just the way
things are!

Sadly though, I have this romantic old fashioned notion or ideal,
that when I buy a product/service, I expect that product to do
what it is supposed to do, I expect it to do what it says on the
packet or in the manual, where Symantec fails is that when they
frequently released buggy if not crippled program updates, they
then refuse to accept that the fault was theirs, BUT then they
never even acknowledge a PAYING CUSTOMER anyway!

I feel your pain...went through a difficult ordeal after upgrading from
NAV2002 to NIS2005. As a former long-time user of Norton/Symantec, I was
really disappointed with the product and lack of good support. My guess is
that they're moving away from individual consumers and more towards
enterprise services. At work, we use their latest corporate versions of
firewall and AV software. They're very nice and don't bog down your system
like the consumer versions do. It's too bad they've chosen this path.

About the same happened to me when I had Windows 98, six years ago. I was stupid enough to
BUY Nortoncrap and install it - my computer almost stopped; it would require five frigging
minutes to open a simple Word file, new or old. I got rid of it and my computer was back.
Never again.

I had to delete two entries in the registry to regain net access
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dhcp
under the dependonservice I deleted the SYMTDI and NISDRV keys. I think
the default is Tcpip, Afd and NetBT, not sure though.

Protowall, BLM, Sygate, Mcafee 9!(yup it works for me(I liked version 7.03
better though)).
Adaware, Spybot S&D 1.3.1TX
Firefox, Thunderbird.
