UNINSTALLING AND REINSTALLING NORTON ANTI-VIRUS

I recently bought a laptop for my daughter. It came with free Norton
Anti-Virus, catch is it was only good for 60 days. I recently found out when
troubleshooting a problem on her computer it expired in August for updates.
I tried running the online virus checker and the page wouldn't load. I ran
another free program and found some off the wall virus tools.avalanche v3.5
in her MS works. I removed the 2004 NAV because I never liked it after
loading it on my othjer computers. I uninstalled it and searched the
registry for any Norton or Symantec entries and removed all related files.
Now I keep getting errors when I try to install Norton 2003 NAV or NSW. I
finally got it to take NSW loading only NAV and the utilities since I don't
need go back, process viewer ,password manager and clean sweep which slows
your system down. Now it either crashes the system toward the end of the
install or I got it in and it took but wasn't loading auto protect. I
started taking the updates and after the second it crashed. It said serious
error related to a Graphics driver. Removed Norton and it runs fine. I used
to love Norton but am beginning to hate it. I think they are making their
software too complicated for the XP. I don't like McAfee. Any ideas how I
can get this to take 2003 NAV. I tried what it said on their site but didn't
work. Is there any other full time virus protection software out there that
will keep your system completely protected that doesn't cost lots of money?

I like EZ-Armor av/firewall from http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft.
However, make sure the computer is 100% virus-free before trying to
install an antivirus program. That may be why you are having trouble.
Here's a way to do that:

TrendMicro's Sysclean is an extensive antivirus tool which has the
advantage of not needing to be installed. It requires two parts - the
scanning engine and the virus pattern files.

1. Create a new folder on your Desktop or the C: drive named something
useful like "Sysclean".
2. Go here and download the two parts of the program to that folder:

http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp - Sysclean
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp - virus pattern files

3. Restart your computer in Safe Mode. Get into Safe Mode by repeatedly
tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up to get to the proper
menu.
4. Go to the Sysclean folder you made and double-click on sysclean.com.
Start the scan. After the scan is finished, look at the log. You may
need to make a note of where any viruses were found if they were not
able to be removed so you can manually delete them.

Now you can install a full-featured antivirus program.

There is an uninstall tool on symantec site.
If yr having probs trying to install Norton2003 its probably as a result of
remnants of 2004
Trying to run multiple AV apps can cause probs.
Personnally I've run Norton products, inc 2004 without probs, on several
sys.
Everyone has their own favorite AV!

Rick:

The only way to get rid of Norton AV or NSW on your machine is to run
their registry cleanup programs after using the uninstall routine from
Control Panel. Two cleanup programs are needed:

rnav2003.exe and symcln.exe

Both can be found and downloaded from the Symantec web site. Do a
search to find them.

As for a good free AV program, I prefer and use AVAST from
www.avast.com. Some people prefer and use the free AVG
www.grisoft.com. Both provide automatic updates and E-Mail
protection.

Good luck.

Ok thanks think I did use the rnav2003 but not symcln. I'll give it one last
try thanks. Don't think there is a virus just remnants of the old software in
registry that I didn't even find searching manually.
