uninstalling all of Norton/Symantec

I got norton trial offer with my laptop. since they only
provide a program in the language of the OS (mine is
Japanese language xp) i decided to switch to mafee. i
continue to get an error message--NT On Access Scanner
service error. I followed the link on the error message
and it leads to mcscan32.dll. I have gone to mcaffee
support and the had me check registry and I still find
tons of symantec stuff. I have deleted the Norton 2003
using the delete program tool. Have followed all of
Norton's on site instructions inlcuding downloading and
running to special uninstallors for stubborn norton
uninstalls. I still get this error message.
In addition, mcafee links to a site to test their shield.
I went there, clicked the "eicar.com" test program and
the shield failed to detect the test 2 of 3 times.
mcafee is of next to no use...the just keep telling me to
go to Norton. Norton's CS is via email and I haven't
received any replies yet.
Anyone had this trouble? Any ideas? I have uninstalled 3
times now. I don't want to mess around in the registry
deleting all symantec items by hand as I am not sure
which I should delete or not. So I will choose not for
now.

i think norton does this on purpose so you have no choice
but to use their terrible bloatware!
format and reinstall xp after backing up your data.

This usually works for me:
Go to start, search and look for anything "Norton" or "Symantec" and delete
all of it then restart.
