Unable to 'install' Norton after Big-Crash

U

Hi:
I am NOT able to install 'Norton system Works' even many attempts.

In the hindsight, it shouldn't be surprised to see this, because after all,
this computer
had a 'crash' after motherboard problem. Just lucky to get the computer
back to the 'life'
after a week's rest.

However, installation of other programs went SMOOTH, including
Word 2000 along with other 'smaller' program.

Is there any trick/way to install 'Norton System Works?'
Because without this, there is NO Anti-Virus in this computer.

Any input, opionion and suggestions would be greately appreciated.
Download Norton's Symclean & RNAV to remove all of Norton's components:
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/products/norton_systemworks/ver5.0/tools/SYMCLN.EXE

Rnav for NAV 2003 and earlier:

http://www.symantec.com/search/
Keywords: symclean, and RNAV

Run 1st: symclean
Run 2nd: RNAV

Also do a computer search and remove any folder that contains
"Catalog.LiveSubscribe"

If you have Norton Internet Security (NIS) installed, also search for the "Rnis removal utility"
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/nis/RnisUPG.exe

Run regedit, and clean 2 entries:
1. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Symantec
2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec

Delete folders:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
C:\Program Files\Symantec
C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Application Data\Symantec
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec

Lastly, run Norton Removal tool - Freeware

You didn't say which version of Norton you're trying to
install. Anything after 2003 tends to be "buggy" at best.

I wouldn't recommend using it for Anti Virus anyway. Go to
www.download com.

get a copy of AVAST4. IT's free, and it's about the best
anti virus I've seen.

You can also get Kasperski there, and you can get AVG there

Last I was aware, all are free and far superior to Norton.

Good luck!

That's all a matter of opinion along with going with the flow of traffic.
I've been using Symantec products since the mid 1990's and have never been
compromised by a virus. I don't suggest or recommend any Norton product
aside from Ghost and PC Anywhere to anyone even though I use them.
Symantec/Norton products in the security field is bloatware and they have
no sense of PR. That doesn't make their product any less effective in
detection/removal than other vendors. In due time if the coders of evil
keep on the course they're going up these days, all products will become
bloatware. In the game of evil vs. good, the good have to amend, amend,
amend, while the evil only need to code destructive propagation with very
little if any amendments.

I tried AVG on a testing machine and not only did the machine get
compromised, AVG couldn't scan dir levels after 3-4 deep in .zip or .rar
files. AVG lasted approx 1 month before getting the boot. That was then,
about 4yrs. ago and perhaps their product has improved, yet it will never
be used on any of my machines again.

I do use Avast on my older machines and it also couldn't scan deep dir's
in a compressed file back about 2yrs ago. Yet it too will be laid to rest
soon enough when my older machines are no longer listed in the requirements
to use it.
