nitoskrnl.exe is missing....and how can I boot windows2k to DOS

PinkCrib

All,
got an error,
"Disk I/O error: Status=00001002
Winodww 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or
corrupt:
<windows2000 root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe"

i don't have an emergency recovery disk, and i don't have recover console
ready either. i'm thinking as long as i can get into the DOS mode, then i
can copy the file (1.6MB size) back. But how can i boot w2k system to DOS
mode with CD-ROM support. w98 boot disk isn't working.

do i lose data if i re-install win2k O/S on top of it?

Thanks

Calvin

If you install windows 2000 on top as a new install then you will lose your
settings. You could perform an in-place upgrade of Windows 2000 which
would repair your system. This is explained in Microsoft Knowledge Base
article 292175 "How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows 2000"

You may also perform a parallel install of Windows 2000 which would involve
installing into another directory. This would allow you to gain access to
the files on the original installation. The parallel install is explained
in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 266465 "How to perform a parallel
installation of Windows 2000" (http://support.microsoft.com/?id=266465)
