ntoskrnl.exe missing or corrupt

My Windows 2000 system crashed. Error message
states "ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt.
I have created 4 boot disks from Recovery CDs, but do not
have an "emergency repair disk".
Is there any way to salvage this?
I'd really like to copy my personal files before doing
full recovery.
Thanks!
Tom

You could boot off of the original cd and run a repair,
this will copy all system files again.

As a first diagnostic step, create a Win2000 boot diskette:

- Format a floppy disk on some other Win2000 PC.
Don't do it on a Win9x PC - it won't work.
- Copy these files from the \i386 folder of your Win2000 CD
to A:\
ntldr
ntdetect.com
- Create a file a:\boot.ini with these lines
[Boot Loader]
Timeout=3
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect
- Boot the machine with this floppy

Now report the result back here. At the same time you
might want to consider your backup strategy. Worrying
about losing files at a time when the system is about to
die is rather too late. Backing up important files once
every week seems a much more sensible and pro-active
approach.
