ntoskrnl.exe missing or corrupt

Dennis

I am using a Dell Latitude laptop with Win 2000 Pro on it.
When I try to boot up, I get this message: windows 2000
root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt. Any
ideas to recover this file?

Thanks

Make sure there is no 3 1/2 inch disks in the drive when
you boot. I have seen that many times.

This article will most likely address your issue
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;103673

This problem is not likely a disk boot error. The message you should get when a floppy disk is in the drive is
BOOT: Couldn't find NTLDR

Read and follow the instructions in the Knowledge Base article above.

Make sure your boot.ini is proper.

You can make a Windows 2000 boot disk by formatting a floppy in GUI mode
(dont quick format) and copying NTDLR, ntdetect.com and boot.ini from
another machine and trying to boot it from floppy. If it boots then you can
copy the boot.ini into the c:\
