News reader?

That is exactly what I suspected.
Well, thanks anyway.
We will have to wait for new versions of Dialog with some of these problems
fixed.

Hey Roger, be sure to hit up 40tude with a request for those features. I'll
do the same.

Please bottom post. Xnews, you will find, correctly places
your cursor at the bottom of quoted text by default. Why
break with convention?
[...]

Did Luu fix that version of Xnews that top posted by default, or
is that the last newest version, if you know?

I don't know.

I *do* know that his intention was to make it easier for people to
inter-post (snipping as appropriate) without having to first scroll up
to the top of the quoted text.

This, obviously, was a stupid idea, and I've very clearly expressed my
disagreement with this change in nsr. While you could expect that most
Xnews users would understand the benefits of bottom posting and
snipping, it is the OE converts that have been given little incentive to
change the bad habits that OE encourages by design.

I will not actively recommend any of the 6.xx.xx[1] versions for this very
reason.

[1] All 6.xx.xx versions, only because I forget which beta this
'feature' crept in at.

I think the best advice we could spread is to select a few lines you want
to reply to before you hit the reply button.
(and bottom post under the quoted lines)

Most newsreaders support this method, and will only include the selected
part as quotes.

If people starting doing this it would lead to a lot less useless quoted
lines in the messages.

You can do that (AYK) with what I've got mapped to the "skip
quoted text" key, backslash. Also there is the pushbutton for
mousers. If I under standand what you mean by scrolling to....
To mean skipping to the first non-quoted text.

That's what I wondered, if you recalled which one it was. I made
a note, somewhere.
I think it was about two/three versions back from the latest.

Just found my note. It was/is 6-08-25 That appears to be the
last version. This is what convinces me more than ever that Luu
has truly set aside Xnews, and possibly, forever. I'm starting
to wish he'd release the source or port it. "Musing aloud".
Lessee, can someone reverse Xnews, and compile it for Linux.
Prolly shouldn't think out loud.

Just DL'd it, and boy am I impressed. But will it sway me from Xnews ...?
XanaNews didn't. (It needs more time to mature.)

You have to use it for a while. It's slower than Xnews for d/l messages but
you can read them offline.
I like the 2 pane setup like Xnews has. At first it was a little hard to
find because at first glance it gives the impression of a 3-pane reader.
Can't beat the GUI. And the spellcheck I keep forgetting to use even though
it will on-the-fly.

Xnews does this nicely.

Can you name a few that also do this? I had Xnews for a whole year
before discovering this feature and was snipping by hand. }:O)

No, I'm refering to the editor.

In those versions prior to the "broken" one, Xnews placed the cursor at
the bottom which caused you to have to scroll up to snip and inter-post
responses. In the latest beta version, Xnews places the cursor at the
top in the editor. While this does make it easier to snip and
inter-post, it also makes it too convenient to not bother snipping at
all and to simply top post.

It's a lose-lose situation. I understand Luu's reasoning in making the
change. I just don't think that he weighed which was the lesser of the
two evils.

Agreed. That's why I'm using v06.02.16. I believe that's the last "cursor
at bottom" version.

I know that Agent (Free Agent) and Dialog supports it.
I think Outlook Express does it also, but it was some time since I used it
so I am not sure.

Practically all email clients I have used also support this.
I think Foxmail is an exception to the rule.

I tried Outlook Express now and found that it does _not_ support this
function.

XanaNews didn't. (It needs more time to mature.)

The only Xnews users who aren't impressed with Dialog are those who
haven't tried it and/or who haven't bothered to learn just how
powerful Dialog is.

XanaNews is a nice program but not even remotely as powerful as
Dialog.

If you want help with Dialog then go to news.software.readers and look
for the "Dialog" headers. Simple to filter on in Dialog.

Regards, John.
