News Readers and sources

Colonel Blip

I've tried a couple of the news readers but what I find lacking (not for
long if I know this group <g>) are sites to find news sources listed and
easily added to the reader list. Anyone have some sites that have lists of
news sources beyond blogs and the code to add to a newsreader?

I think the OP meant to ask: "Where are the _free_ news servers?"

The only one I know and use is "news.individual.net", which used to be
knows as "news.cis.dfn.de", in Germany.

No lists but I use News Alert for breaking news and local news; it
updates itself automatically and you can specify categories. You can
also use Spybot Search&Destroy to remove the ads without removing its
functionality.

Have you tried Amphetadesk? It gives direct access to thousands of
news sources, and contains tips for accessing thousands of others.

Whew! Thanks.

That would be the one I'd recommend, too; I use it as my secondary
server.

I can see that my poorly worded request has sent responders down a path I
wasn't after. What I was looking for was a web site that has a listing of
RSS feeds that can easily be added to a newsreader such as SharpReader,
BlogExpress, Amphetadesk, etc. Sorry for the confusion.

See my other message for what I really meant rather than what I originally
said :-/

However your note got my interest and I tried news.individual.net; however
it requires authorization so I guess I'm out of luck.

It requires "registration" for access. But it's free, and I (and
others) have not noticeably been SPAMmed as a result of registration.

And you can just register with a non-primary mailbox, anyway -- one you
use for other registrations where you need to get a key or password, but
for which you don't care if you get spammed.

There's one place (that I know of) that opens a *temporary* mailbox
*upon receiving mail at the domain with any address*, and the box is
deleted a few hours later. That's perfect for the one-time-only needs
of such registrations. You don't even have to set up the box -- that
email from [whoever's sending you the key] creates it.

http://mailinator.com

It's not a *secure* box; i.e., anybody that knows it exists can read it
(for those few hours). But chances are probably slim that if you
register for Service X as (e-mail address removed) (go for it! <g>)
anybody's going to read it. If it even mattered.

Try newsreader.com. Also do a search for Xananews, it's a newsreader that I
like.
