Networking problem - i dont know much so bare with me :(

Hi there, me and my brother have decided to try and network our two PC's, one
upstairs and this one downstairs. We managed to set up a basic network using
all the windows help and it appeared to be working.

This computer access the internet via the modem to the ADSL broadband modem
thing, my brothers PC succesfully ALSO logged onto the internet through the
RJ45 cable into this PC and then into the Broadband Speedtouch thing.

However, when i click on network places i dont seem to able to access his
computer (or his to mine), it says access is denied. Meaning we cant file
share but for some reason he CAN use the internet. Also he cannot access the
printer that is connected to THIS pc.

Obviously by reading this you can tell i dont know a great deal about
networking, but id be really grateful if anyone could help.

P.S - i thought the problem may be the fact Windows Firewall and Norton 2004
Firewall was activated on both PC's, so i turned both off but it still
wouldnt work.

Yes - that makes sense. Internet access via a router/gatway isn't related to
file/printer sharing.

Also he
cannot access the printer that is connected to THIS pc.

Yep - make sure both PCs are in the same workgroup, you don't have the XP
firewall enabled (or if you do, you've configured it to allow file/print
sharing on the LAN only), that you can ping each computer's IP address from
the other, that you can ping each computer's name from the other. Then
create an identical username/password on each computer or both use the same
login/password on each computer.

Running two firewalls at the same time is likely to cause networking
problems. Choose one or the other.

These tips should help you get everything working:

1. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

2. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.

3. Run "ipconfig /all" on XP and look at the "Node Type" at the
beginning of the output. If it says "Peer-to-Peer" (which should
actually be "Point-to-Point") that's the problem. It means that the
computer only uses a WINS server, which isn't available on a
peer-to-peer network, for NetBIOS name resolution.

If that's the case, run the registry editor, open this key:

HLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters

and delete these values if they're present:

NodeType
DhcpNodeType

Reboot, then try network access again.

If that doesn't fix it, open that registry key again, create a DWORD
value called "NodeType", and set it to 1 for "Broadcast" or 4 for
"Mixed".
