Blimee,

One PC can see the other but can't access it - the second can't even see the
first - 9 times out of 10 this is caused by a misbehaving software firewall,
which screws up the master browser.

Try setting any firewall to allow file and printer sharing by opening the
following ports (preferably for Local Zone only): TCP 139, 445; UDP 137, 138,
445.

Also, check both PCs, to see if Simple File Sharing is enabled or disabled.

If SFS is disabled, check the Local Security Policy (Control Panel -
Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves".

If you set the Local Security Policy to "Guest only", make sure that the Guest
account is enabled, and has a non-blank password. If "Classic", setup and use a
common account with identical password on both computers.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
