Internet access via wired networked XP PC

I have an XP PC with a wired ASDL modem for internet connection (which works
fine)
This is in a wired (Ethernet) home LAN with a Vista PC.

I have run the network wizard on the XP PC.

The Vista PC network map shows the network, including the Residential
gateway device, but will not connect to the internet via the RGD (which has
the correct connection shown). I can still access files and printers across
the network.

I have changed workgroup names to both be WORKGROUP - no joy. Tried
reverting to both as MSHOME, no joy.
Have set Vista network to private, network discovery ON etc as per all
technical advice docs. No joy

Have rerun the network wizard on XP - no joy.

Have added ports 138 UDP, 139 UDP etc to Vista PC (as per a tech advice
doc) still no joy.

Please can someone help - what else do I need to do?

What do you mean by "XP PC with a wired ASDL modem for internet
connection.?" How is the Vista machine connected? Are you using a
combination modem/router, external router or ICS?

In addition to GTS's response, file and printer access on a network does
not automatically equate to internet access for all computers, An ASDL
modem does not provide IP address assignments to computers connected to the
primary computer with Internet access as does a router.

Static IP addressing is required - "Ipconfig /all" data would be helpful -

The Vista Pc is connected to the XP PC by means of an Ethernet cable plugged
into a network card on the back of each PC- very basic.

I'm sorry I don't know if the modem is a router as well - I don't think so
as the Vista PC has to access the internet THROUGH the XP pc - not
independently. I set the network up using the XP networking wizard which
offers this as an option.

And how is the XP machine connected to the DSL Modem? By USB or does it
have 2 network cards?
You are using (or trying to use) an XP feature called Internet Connection
Sharing or ICS. This should be doable, thought you would be better off
buying a router instead. It's more reliable and the XP machine wouldn't
have to be running to use the Internet on the Vista machine. The router
would connect to the DSL modem (and would have to be properly configured)
and both PCs would connect to LAN ports on the router.

Here are some links about ICS that might help.

If you run ipconfig /all on the Vista PC and post it here, it would be
helpful.

Thank you for replying. The modem connects to a USB port on the XP PC.
I am trying to use ICS and have done all the necessary on the XP PC.
Trouble is, the Vista PC doesn't offer the same options as described in the
tech documents for setting up an internet connection on the client computer,
e.g. the new connection wizard doesn't offer

"Set up my connection manually, and then click Next.
Click Connect using a broadband connection that is always on, and then click
Next."

I can run ipconfig on the Vista PC - but can only display it on screen.
the >> filename command fails with "access denied". I can save a screenshot -
but can't paste that into this message format. I have searched tech forums
but can't find how to save the output to a file in vista!

I know I could buy a router, but we don't really need one for most of the
time and I know that this should be possible, so I want to make it work!

I will send the ipconfig info if someone can just tell me how to direct the
output to a file!

Dear Al
IP addresses - XP PC is 192.168.0.1 and VIsta is 191.168.0.219
How do I output ipconfig to a file in Vista?
