netwrk problem

i am networking 2 computers wirelessly, all is ok but my broadband modem is
usb powered so whenever i put my first pc into standby or shut down it cuts
the power supply to the modem so the networked computer upstairs cant access
the internet and gets disconnected.

is there any way to keep the power to the broadband modem "alive" so the
second pc can still access the net while the first pc is on stand by.

thanks in advance.

Its not just a question of modem power...
You need the first PC to provide the wireless connection to the second.

Unless you buy a wireless router to take over these functions,
then the computer with the modem needs to be up and running
before the other machine can connect via it.

Let me understand this, you are saying i need a mains powered modem/router
then i can turn off the pc downstairs and the upstairs one will have an
active connection.

Yes.

With a mains powered wireless modem / router, each computer
can access the Internet independent of the other one.
